#1.  "Is there any other way out?" Sienna demanded, short of breath.

  "I don't think so," Langdon said. "This garden is a walled city, just like . . ." He paused suddenly, turning and looking east. "Just like . . . the Vatican." A strange glint of hope flickered across his face.

  Sienna had no idea what the Vatican had to do with their current (A)[     ], but Langdon suddenly began nodding, gazing east along the back of the palace.

  "It's a long shot," he said, hustling her along with him now. "But there might be a different way to get out of here."

    "가능성은 낮지만 여기서 벗어나는 다른 길이 하나 있을 지도 몰라요."라고 말하면서 랭던 교수는 서둘러 그녀를 함께 가게 했다.

[#2. 해석] "주목하세요. 내 생각에 베갯잇 값도 제게 청구해야 할 거예요. 옷들을 사야만 했는데 가방이 전혀 없어서요. . ."라고 나는 말했다.

   나는 몇 안되는 내 물건들을 넣은 베갯잇을 들어 올렸더니 그는 내 곤란한 처지를 보고 킬킬 웃었다. 하지만 나에게 비용을 청구할 것을 생각해보니 혼란만 야기되어서 그는 결국 호텔이 부담하는 것으로 하겠다고 내게 말했다.

   "요원들은 빠르게 움직여야 하는 거 이해해요. 다른 분들은 체크아웃 할 시간도 없었어요. 제 생각엔 텍사스 토네이도처럼 그냥 날아가 버렸죠."라고 그는 말했다.

attributive adjectives : [문법] 한정 형용사 → 속성 (부여) 형용사  [한정(determining)은 적합한 용어가 아니고 속성 형용사 또는 전치 수식 성질 형용사가 맞는 용어라 할 수 있다.]

attributive [ətríbjutiv] : (L ad- : to + tribuere : assign : attribuere : allot → O F attribut) [속성을 할당하는 데서]

predicative adjectives : [문법] 서술 형용사 [흔히 'be 동사' 뒤에서 서술하는 데서]

predicative [prédəkèitiv] : 서술적인, 술어의; 서술사  : (L prae-, pre- : before + dicare, dicere : to say) [앞의 것을 말하는(서술하는) 데서]

predicate [prédəkèit] : 단정하다; 함축하다, 암시하다; 서술하다 [미리 기술해 놓은 것과 서술하는 데서]

predicament [pridíkəmənt] : 상태, 경우(state); (특히) 곤경, 궁지; [논리학] 범주(category)

[원래 말해 놓은 상태나 범주(아리스토텔레스의 10 범주)에서 나중에 의미 추가로 '나쁜 상태, 곤경'의 뜻이 생겨나게 된다. ㅎ '술어'와 '곤경'이 같은 어원 출신이라는 '곤혹'스럽군요.]
