정답 - E : [long] → [longer] : 배수 비교는 먼저 비교를 완성한 후에 곱하기. 뒤에 'than'이 있으므로 앞에 비교급인 'longer'가 필요하다.

B : 'difference'는 양쪽형 명사지만 앞에 구체적 모양을 나타내는 'slight, great 등'이 붙을 때 가산 명사로 사용한다.

C : 'average'는 가산 명사인데 'above (the) average' 같은 경우 'the'가 생략되기도 하고 'on average'가 압도적으로 'on the average'보다 많이 사용된다. '보통, 평균적으로'의 뜻으로 기능이 앞서면 관사를 안 쓰는 것이 선호된다.

참고로 아랍어로 'awariyah : damaged merchandise'가 'O Italian avaria, Middle F avarie'를 거쳐 생긴 단어인데 아랍에서 배의 손상 정도의 평균에서 사용되던 것이 영어에서 일반적인 평균의 뜻으로 사용되게 된다.

[해석] 25세에서 44세 그룹의 여성들은 집 밖에서나 집 안에서나 거의 같은 시간 일을 하고 45세에서 64 세 그룹에는 약간의 차이가 있을 뿐이다. 하지만 남자들은 평균적으로 안에서 보다 밖에서 3 배나 오랜 시간을 일한다.

[핵심 문법] 요약 동격

Norman may be pretending to be sick to avoid going to school, a possibility that we cannot ignore. "노먼은 학교 안 가려고 아픈 척하고 있을 수도 있는데 이는 우리가 무시할 수 없는 가능성이다."

'a possibility'는 'which(앞 문장 전체를 선행사로 한다.) is a possibility that we cannot ignore'에서 'which is'가 생략되고 만들어진 동격인데 앞 문장을 요약하는 내용이라는 점에서 ‘요약 동격’이라 칭한다.

Twin bridges span a major river in this province, a situation causing generals to re-think their bridge-battle tactics. (= which is a situation)
