[해설]

[take on (부사)]

​1) 태우다; 들고 가다  : to lead someone or carry something on board a ship, plane, etc.

Can we take the children on or are they too young? "애들 태워도 되나요? 너무 어린가요?"

Each passenger is allowed to take on one small suitcase to fit under the plane seat.

"승객은 일 인당 작은 가방을 들고 가서 비행기 좌석 밑에 놓을 수 있다."

2) 추가 환승시키다  : to carry (someone) further on a journey

When you get to the town, another bus will take you on (to where you want to go).

"시에 도착하면 다른 버스가 여러분을 (원하시는 곳으로) 환승해 드릴 겁니다."

3) (차량이) ~을 싣다  : to obtain a supply of (something or people)

We can't take on any more passengers, the bus is full. "손님 더는 못 싣습니다. 만땅입니다."

4) [일·책임을] 지다 : to accept (work, responsibility, etc.)

I think you've taken on as much as you can do this year, please don't start any other activity.

"올해 할 수 있는 만큼 떠맡으셨어요. 제발 다른 거 더 하지는 마세요."

5) (직원을) 고용하다, [제자를] 맡다 : to employ a worker; to accept a pupil

The factory has to take on 1,000 additional workers in order to complete the contract on time.

"공장은 제시간에 계약을 마무리하려면 1,000 명을 더 고용해야만 한다."

6) ~에 도전하다 → ~와 붙다  : fight or compete against someone 

It was brave of you to take on θ a man twice your size. "덩치가 두 배인 남자와 붙었다니 참 용감했구나."

'on' 다음에 생략된 것이 '자신의 몸'이면 '붙어보다' → '도전하다'의 뜻이 된다. ['take'는 타동사, 'on'은 부사]

I knew I couldn't take him on. "나는 알고 있었다. 내가 그와 붙어서는 안 된다는 것을."

I will take him on at tennis. "나는 테니스 한 판 그와 붙어 볼 거야."

I am willing to take him on if he disrespects me again. "그가 나를 다시 무시하면 기꺼이 자식과 붙어볼 거야."

Democrats were reluctant to take on a president whose popularity ratings were so high. 

"민주당은 인기 평점이 아주 높은 대통령과 붙어 보기를 꺼렸다."

[본문]

They couldn't believe that these women with prams were coming down to take them (B)[on].

7) [양상·색태 등을] 띠다 : to seem or begin to have (a quality, form, or appearance)

His face took on the look of a hunted animal. "그의 얼굴은 사냥 당하는 동물의 표정이었다."

As the word was repeated over and over again, it began to take on a different meaning.

"그 단어는 거듭해서 다시 사용됨에 따라 다른 의미를 갖기 시작했다."
