#1.   The man walked into the convenience store and a few seconds later returned with his pregnant woman and a sack filled to overflowing with chips. A few seconds later they were in the van and driving away, no longer appearing sinister.

     Jillian shook her head. "I'm ... I'm jumping at shadows and it pisses me off. You know, the creep really did a (A)[      ] on me. I was never one of those scaredy-cats who run around with Mace or have triple locks on their doors or rely on alarm systems and big dogs. I've just never been really frightened." She glanced at him. "Until now."

 

#2.   Megan nodded. "I don't blame you." She drew a deep breath. "I'm even grateful to you for distracting me. I was so scared I felt like throwing up." She started for the tree where Montalvo and the sheriff were waiting. "And I've no intention of putting on a show. I'd rather you all go away."

   Eve followed her. "So that you can have a seance? Or do you need something that belonged to the boy so you can tell us where he is?"

   "Knock it off," Megan said. "Good Lord, those vultures really did a (B)[      ] on you. I can see why you're such a skeptic. A few months ago I would have agreed with you right down the line." She didn't take her eyes from the tree. "Okay, do you want me to tell you what I do? I don't need any objects to tell me where Bobby Joe is. Someone who does that is called a Finder, and I have no talent in that direction. I'm a Listener. I hear voices. Whenever I'm in a place where something highly stressful or tragic happened, I can hear what took place, the conversations, the emotions . . . Oh, yes, definitely the emotions. I hear the complete echo."

 

#3. Just to add... You can also hear it on home improvement shows. The (relatively) new toilets have two buttons--one for liquid, two for solids. The host of the show will explain this as "it has two buttons - one for '(C)[       ] one' and one for '(C)[   "   ] two'".

"좋아요. 당신은 제가 무엇을 하는 사람인지 말해주길 바라죠? 바비 조가 어디에 있는지 말해주는 물건 같은 것들은 필요 없어요. 그게 필요한 사람은 발견자라고 하지요. 전 그 방면에서는 재능이라고 없어요. 저는 듣는 자에요. 소리를 듣죠. 뭔가 괴롭고 비극적인 일이 일어났던 곳에 있을 때마다 뭔 일이 일어났는지, 대화들, 그때의 감정들을 듣지요. 오, 그렇죠 감정들, 말하자면 그 메아리를 완전하게 듣지요."

[#3. 해석] 그냥 덧붙이는 말인데. 홈 개선 쇼에서도 그 말을 들을 수 있다. (비교적) 새로운 화장실에 두 개의 버튼이 있는데 하나는 액체 용이고 두 번째는 고체 용이다. 쇼의 호스트는 이 제품을 "버튼이 두 개 있어요. 하나는 '1 번'이고 하나는 '2 번'이죠."라고 설명하게 됩니다.

number one : 소변(자주 하는 거) 

number two : 대변

우리가 '작은 거야, 큰 거야?'라고 말할 때 이들은 '1번이야, 2번이야?'로 말하는 셈이다.

A young woman was talking to her very young son. The son said he had to go to the bathroom. Mom asked, "Number one or number two? "한 젊은 여성이 아주 어린 아들과 얘기하고 있다. 아들은 화장실에 가야 한다고 말했다. 엄마가 물었다. "작은 거야, 아니면 큰 거야?"

I think they're fairly common, although more so with children and in jokes than in serious use with adults. "Number 2 seems to have morphed into "dropping a deuce" with college-age folks these days.

우리도 밤 무대에서 오늘의 몇 번째 가수라고 해놓고는 (예컨대 김범룡) 엉뚱한 사람이 대신 나오면 '사기다'라고 할 수 있죠.

원래 흑인 사회의 밤 무대에서도 가수, 연예인(acts)들이 'numbers(팸플릿에)'라고 불렸는데 '어디서 숫자 가지고 장난, 사기를 쳐?'의 의미에서 '속이다(to deceive)'의 뜻이 생겨났다고 한다.
