   1938 년에 노벨상을 수상한 직후에 페르미는 무솔리니의 파시즘을 피해 미국으로 이주해서 원자 폭탄의 제조에 정점을 이루게 되는 최초의 지속 핵반응을 만들어 내었던 시카고 팀의 유수한 지도자가 되었다.

   아주 많은 다른 과학 상과 마찬가지로, 작은 상들과도 심지어 마찬가지로, 보상은 감사패나 작은 조각 상만은 아니고 금전적인 선물도 포함하고 있었다. 이사벨의 경우 고 에너지 물리학 분야에서의 그녀의 대담한 연구는 이제 그녀에게 7만 5천 달러를 가져다주었다.
