[해설]

[put the kibosh on ~]

~을 찍소리 못하게 하다; 아주 결딴내다; 끝장을 내다 → 박살내다, 아작을 내다 : to stop or end (something) : to prevent (something) from happening or continuing [ㅎ '-바쉬', 박살]

His mother put the kibosh on his smoking habit. "엄마가 그의 흡연을 아작을 냈다."

Rattray, however, personally showed up at the meeting to try and put the kibosh on their plans.

"하지만 레트레이는 직접 회의장에 와서 그들의 계획을 결딴내려 했다."

News of unrest in the area really put the kibosh on our plans to vacation there.

'등에 놓고', '등에 붙이고'에서 '등에 업고'로 해석할 수 있다.

If I put another inch on my waist, I shan't be able to wear this dress. 

"허리가 1 인치 더 늘면 이 드레스는 입을 수 없을 거다."

'허리에 1 인치 더 붙이면'에서.

The restaurant puts an additional charge on the bill to cover increased costs.

"이 레스토랑은 인상된 비용을 보전하기 위해서 계산서에 추가적인 비용을 더하였다."

[구동사 put on]

If I put on θ another inch, I shan't be able to wear this dress.  (to gain (weight or size))

"1 인치 더 늘면 이 드레스는 입을 수 없을 거야."

'my waist'가 생략되고 'on'은 부사로 쓰인 경우이다. 'put another inch on θ'에서 무거운 'another inch'가 '부사인 on' 아래로 내려간 경우이다.

How can I have put on θ a pound since yesterday? I've eaten nothing!

"하루 만에 1 파운드가 찔 수 있지? 그 새 아무것도 먹지 않았는데!"

'my body (or my weight)'에 1 파운드를 올려붙인 것에서.

How much (weight) did you put on θ over Christmas?  "크리스마스에 얼마나 찐 거야?"

'몸에 얼마나 붙인 것'에서

He put his coat on θ hurriedly and ran out of the house. "그는 서둘러 코트를 걸치고 집에서 뛰어나갔다."

우리말로도 상황이 뻔하므로 '겉옷 위에 걸치고'라 하지 않고 '위에 걸치고'라 하는 것과 마찬가지이다.

"사무실을 떠날 때 바로 전화해줘요. 그러면 저녁 하기 시작할게요. 당신이 집에 왔을 때 준비되도록."  (to start cooking)

'the stove'가 생략되고 'on'은 부사로 쓰이고 있다. '저녁 올려놓을 게요'에서.

여기서는 'the stage' 또는 'sports field'가 생략된 것이다.

여기서 'on'은 'ahead'나 'forward' 뜻의 부사이다. '앞으로 위치시키는 것'은 '앞당기다'라는 뜻이다.

act : 연극(조의 행동), 꾸밈, 시늉

My neighbor is always putting on θ airs, pretending she knows important people and is invited to rich parties, and so on. "내 이웃은 항상 잘난체 하면서 중요 인사들을 알고 부자들 파티에 초청되는 등등 척을 한다."

(put on airs : to pretend to be very grand : 거드름 피우다, 잘난 체하다)

얼굴과 어깨 등등에 공기가 들어가 불룩, 불룩 솟은 것을 상상하면 'airs'가 잘 이해된다.

I don't believe you, you're just putting me on θ. (to deceive (someone) into believing something for fun)

"안 믿어. 너 괜히 비행기 태우는 거지."

'장난으로 비행기 태우는 것'이 '속임수'에 해당되는 것을 상상하면 이해가 쉽다.
