[해설]

죽마(stilt) 표현에 해당된다. 'the best' 뒤에 'intention'을 사용하지 않고 쓰는 좀 잘난체하는 표현이다.

It has to be seen as legitimate, (C)[or] else its use has the opposite of its intended effect.

'has to'가 당위문의 일종이므로 '안 그러면'의 뜻으로 'or (else)'를 사용해야 한다.

이보다 사실과 거리가 먼 얘기는 없다. → (이는) 절대 (사실이) 아니다, (이는) 전혀 뜬금없는 소리다, (그건) 전혀 엉뚱한 소리다 : used to say that something is absolutely not true; used to say that what has been suggested is completely untrue  [뒤에 'than that'가 생략되어 있습니다. '어떤 것도 이보다 더 사실에서 조금이라도 더 떨어져 있을 수 없다.' 즉 '이는 가장 사실에서 떨어진 것이다'란 뜻이 됩니다. 비교급의 강한 부정으로 의미상 최상급이고 'than it, than that'가 숨어 있어서 이해하기 어려운 표현입니다. 간단하게 이해하는 것은 'Nothing'과 'truth'만 연결해서 '(이는) 사실이 아녀'로 새기는 것이다. ㅎ 이런 뜬금-포.]

[뜬금없다] 

옛날 곡물시장에서 가격을 정하던 방법과 관련된 표현이다. 쌀의 가격이 일정하지 않아서 절차를 거쳐서 '띄어 놓은(뜬) 금'을 정해 알리는데 이 절차가 없으면 '뜬금없이'란 표현을 사용하게 됩니다. '뚱딴지(돼지감자) 같다'나 '생뚱맞다'도 표현도 비슷한 표현입니다.

People say we're splitting up, but nothing could be further from the truth.

"우리가 갈라설 거라고 하지만 그건 뜬금없는 소리다."

Nothing could be further from reality —I have never accepted bribes in my entire career.

'truth' 대인 'reality'를 사용하기도 한다.

A : You must be thinking how terrible I look. "제가 정말 끔찍한 모습이라 생각하죠?"

B : Nothing could be further from my mind. You're as beautiful as always. 

"그런 생각을 할 리가 없죠. 자긴 언제나처럼 아름다워요."

'mind'가 나와도 '부정 의미'로 이해하면 된다.
