[어휘 또는 표현]

dive in : 뛰어들다, 하기[먹기] 시작하다 : plunge one's body into something; start enthusiastically; start eating eagerly

The bird flew up suddenly before diving in the water. "새가 갑자기 날아오르더니 물속으로 다이빙했다."

I know you're nervous about starting school, but you just need to dive in and do your best!

"학교생활을 시작하는 거 불안해하는 거 알지만 그냥 확 뛰어들어서 최선을 다해야 한다."

The teacher laid out the chemistry equipment, and the students dived in. 

"선생님이 화학 장치를 펼쳐놓자 학생들은 열라 시작했다."

I'm getting hungry, I can't wait to dive in. "나 배고파 뒤지겠네. 당장 열라 먹고 싶어."

indulge [indΛldʒ] : 빠지다, 마음껏 누리다; [욕망 등을] 만족시키다, 충족시키다; 응석 부리게 하다; 탐닉하다 : (L indulgere : give free rein to) [고삐를 풀어 놓는 데서]

I can't afford indulging my feelings toward him right now.

'afford'는 부정사를 목적어로 취하는 것으로 계속 기억하자. 'to be'가 생략된 형태로 기억해도 되지만 내 감정에 따르는 것을 상태적으로 보아 드물게 '~ing'가 사용된 경우이다. 

[해설]

friendly fire : [불가산] 우군[자기편]에 의한 포격[공격] : during a war, shooting that is hitting you from your own side, not from the enemy

Three soldiers were killed by friendly fire when a mortar bomb hit their truck. 

"세 명의 군인이 박격포가 트럭에 맞는 아군의 포격으로 사망했다."

An extraordinarily high percentage of allied casualties were caused by friendly fire. 

"아주 많은 퍼센트의 연합군 희생자가 아군의 포격으로 야기되었다."

[an angel of a wife]

'an angel of'는 동격부에 해당되고 피동격부는 'a wife'로 뒤에 부정관사가 사용되는 것에 주의하자. (자세한 것은 문법 파트 동격에서 다루기로 한다.)

[a whopper of a lie]

아내는 '천사 같은'으로 수식하죠. 거짓말(a lie)은 '엄청나게 큰 것'의 뜻으로 'whopper'를 사용합니다. [버거킹 가보시면 '와퍼', 지금도 파나요?]

Rumsfeld's claim turned out to be a whopper of a lie, according to my friend Ray McGovern, a former CIA analyst.
