3개 이상은 'both'를 사용하지 못하고 'at once A, B, and C' 또는 'A, B, and C alike'을 사용한다.

'once'[wʌns]는 중세 영어에서 'one'의 속격(genitive)의 형태로 'ones'가 만들어졌고 16 세기에 '-s'를 묵음으로 만들기 위해서 '-ce'라는 스펠링이 사용되게 된다. 사건의 발생이 '하나(one)가 되게 하면 '즉시, 바로'의 뜻이 되고 두 사건이든 세 사건이든 그 이상이든 하나의 시점이면(all at one time) '동시에'의 뜻이 된다.

I fell asleep at once. "나는 바로 잠이 들었다."

Now, go upstairs at once and clean your room! "지금 바로 2층에 가서 네 방 치워라!"

You must come here at once; it is an emergency. "바로 여기로 와라. 비상이다."

The women met at a party and became good friends at once. 

"여자들은 파티에서 만나서 바로 친구가 되었다."

I need you to call me at once — we have an urgent matter to discuss. 

"즉시 내게 전화해. 논의할 긴급한 일이 있어."

The boss wants you to start working on this report at once. 

"사장님이 너 이 리포트 즉시 시작하라고 하신다."

Mother told the children to come inside at once. "엄마가 애들에게 바로 집으로 들어오라고 했다."

All at once the rain came down. "(모든 것이 하나인 양) 갑자기 비가 내렸다."

이런 경우면 'suddenly'의 뜻으로도 사용된다.

2) 동시에, 다 같이 : simultaneously, at the same time, together, all at one time

I can't do two things at once! "두 가지 동시에는 할 수 없어요."

Don't all talk at once. "모두 동시에 같이 말하지 마라."

Everything happened at once. "모든 게 다 같이 일어났다."

Don't try to carry more than two boxes at once—they're heavy! "두 개 이상 나르려 하지 마. 그것들 무거워."

I can't understand a word with all of you screaming at once. 

"한 마디로 못 알아듣겠네. 너네들이 동시에(다 함께) 소리 지르잖아."

I'm not superwoman, you know. I can't do a hundred things at once. 

"당신 알잖아. 내가 슈퍼우먼 아니잖아. 백가지를 동시에 할 순 없어."

We can't all fit into the boat at once. "우린 모두 다 같이 보트에 탈 순 없다."

You can't have three weeks' holiday all at once, you'll have to take them separately.

동시에 두 개의 대상을 언급하는 것으로 'funny'와 'sad'는 대립적인 개념이라도 'but'가 아니고 'and'를 사용해야 한다.
