[#1. 해석]  화재 현장은 펜실베이니아 대학(흔히 유펜)의 서쪽 가장자리의 지저분한 지역('strip'은 가늘고 긴 지역으로 베이거스에도 있다.) 이었다. 어둠이 내렸고 번쩍이는 비상 등은 수 마일 밖에서도 보였다. 경찰차들은 그 거리의 두 블록을 폐쇄했다. 적어도 8 대의 소방차들과 네 대의 고가 사다리 트럭이 와 있었고 공중으로 70 피트 이상 된 곳에서 소방관들은 비상 버킷에서 연기가 나는 지붕으로 물 발사 총으로 물을 뿌렸다. 이 밤은 디젤 차의 소리로 우르릉거렸으며 고압의 물 투척이 나무 위로 소리를 내면서 더 많은 유리들은 산산 조각내었다. 잔뜩 부푼 호스가 뱀처럼 거리를 가로지르고 있었고 금방은 어디도 갈 거 같지 않은 주차된 차량들의 휠 캡까지 물이 차올라 있었다.

[#2. 해석]  애덤, 교수님의 프로젝트는 아무런 문제를 야기하지 않습니다. 연구가 성공하면 우리는 생명을 연장시킬 뿐만 아니라 80 살의 어머니도 아주 늙어 보이거나 기형의 모습이 되지 않도록 해서 50 살 여자가 지금 누리는 것과 같은 건강을 누리도록 노화 과정을 지연시키게 될 거니까요.

contumely [kάntuməli] : 오만; 모욕   : (L con : 강화사 + tumere : to swell)  [완전히 부풀어 오른 모습에서]
