= if something or someone is part of a group or organization, they belong to it or are included in it.

여기서 'part'는 단수 가산명사 또는 불가산 명사로 쓰인다.

C : 문제에서 강화사인 'much'를 빼고 보면 'a more part'인데 여기서 'more'는 'much' 아니면 'many'의 비교급이어야 한다. 'many'라면 'a'는 없이 'many parts'여야 하는데 '~에 속하다'의 표현에서는 복수형을 쓰는 표현은 없다. 'much'라면 'a'는 없이 'much part'여야 한다. 따라서 'much part'의 비교급인 C에서도 'a'는 없어야 한다.

'be a great part of ~'는 가능한 표현이다. 이것의 비교급 표현은 'be a (much) greater part of'가 된다. 문제에서 'more'는 고칠 수 없는 부분이다.

'*an as great part'로는 쓸 수 없다. 'as great'를 앞으로 분리해서 써야 한다.

"자유는 어떤 다른 목적을 위해서 희생하기에는 그 전통의 많은 부분이다."

불가산 명사로 쓰이고 있으므로 'much'는 'part'에 그냥 이어진다.

It's too much of a part of modern society. "그건 현대 사회의 아주 많은 부분이다."

'*a too much part'로 쓸 수 없다. 'too much'를 앞으로 분리하는데 'much'는 명사로 쓰일 수 있는 것이어서 사이에 'of'를 쓰고 분리시킨다.

'much of'가 쓰인 후에 동등 비교가 만들어진 것이다.

'much of a part'가 비교급이 된 것이다.

D : they are now much more part of the culture [of the Senate] than [of the House].

'than' 뒤에는 반복되는 'they are the culture'는 생략하고 'of the Senate'과 'of the House'를 병치시키고 있다. 대등 비교의 입장에서 보면 'the culture of the Senate'과 'that of the House'로 병치시키는 것이 합당하지만 쓰지 않아도 상황 상 알 수 데 너무 길어지는 것을 피하기 위하여 간단하게 쓰고 있다.

B : 원칙적으로는 'in both the House of representatives and in the Senate'이 아니고 {both [in the House of representatives] and [in the Senate]}을 써야 한다.

[해석] 미국 의회사의 초기에 필리버스터는 양원에서 다 이용되었지만 이제는 하원보다는 상원의 문화에 더 많이 속한다.
