(2) 2형식 지속형 동사

remain, keep, stay, hold, lie, continue, stand, etc.

'be 동사'를 쓴 것에 비하여 '지속'의 개념이 추가된 것이다.

Keep quiet. "계속 조용히 해라."

He remained silent. (He = remained) "그는 여전히 침묵했다."

He stays young. (He = young) "그는 여전히 젊다."

How do you stay so cool in such hot weather? (stay cool : 냉정을 유지하다) 

"어떻게 그런 더운 날씨에 그렇게 냉정을 유지하는 거야?"

Ronald, sit down here and stay put. "로널드, 여기 앉아서 그대로 있어."

The promise still holds good. (The promise = good) "약속은 여전히 유효하다."

He lies still. (He = still) "그는 움직이지 않고 있다."

He continues well. (He = well) "그는 계속 건강하다."

He stands firm. "그는 결심이 확고하다."

정답 - C : [order] → [orderly] : 'become'은 2형식 변화형 동사로 'democratic'과 병치되는 형용사인 'orderly'가 쓰여야 한다. 'peoples'과 'order'는 이퀄 관계가 성립되지 않는다.

A : 'determine'은 타동사로 'determine 목적어 to 부정사'로 'determine to 부정사'로, 자동사로는 'determine on ~ing'로 사용되기는 하지만 보통은 'be determined(형용사) to 부정사'로 많이 사용되며 분사 구문일 때는 'determined to 부정사'로 당연 'being'을 생략한 채로 사용한다. 

B : 'peoples'가 '민족들'이므로 'other'가 쓰인 것이 맞다.

[해석] 다른 민족들이 민주적이고 질서 있게 되도록 도울 결심을 한 우드로 윌슨은 미국 사에 있어서 가장 심한 군사적 간섭 주의자가 되었다.

[원본] Walter LaFeber in The American Age (p. 261) observes that Wilson, "Determined to help other peoples become democratic and orderly, … himself became the greatest military interventionist in U.S. history."

(3) 2형식 변화형 동사

become, go, run, fall, come, get, grow, turn, turn out, prove, make, loom, bulk, etc.

'be 동사'를 쓴 것에 비하여 '변화'의 개념이 추가된 것이다.

He became a beggar. (He = a beggar) "그는 거지가 되었다."

cf. I don't know what will become of the boy if he keeps failing his examinations.

"그 소년은 시험에 계속 떨어지면 어떻게 되는 지 나는 모른다."

'happen to (often in a bad way)'의 뜻으로는 'become of'를 사용한다. 드물게 'come of'를 사용하기도 한다.

He ran mad. (He = mad) "그는 미쳐버렸다."

cf. He ran madly. (He ≠ madly) (1형식) "그는 미친 듯이 달렸다."

He went mad. (He = mad) "그는 미쳐버렸다."

cf. Everything went well with him. "그는 만사가 잘 되었다."

cf. Everything went badly with him. "그는 만사가 엉망이 되었다."

He went blind in his late thirties. (= lost his sight) "그는 30 대 후반에 눈을 멀었다."

The washing machine went phut again. (go phut : 고장 나다) "세탁기는 고장이 나 버렸다."

He fell asleep. (He = asleep) "그는 골아 떨어졌다."

Poor Mrs Whitehead dropped dead in the street yesterday. (drop dead : 급사하다)

"불쌍한 화이트헤드 부인은 어제 거리에서 쓰러져 죽었다."

Sometimes dreams come true. (dreams = true) "때로는 꿈은 사실이 된다 / 실현된다."

Now come clean, Myra. What's really eating you up? (come clean : 실토하다, 털어놓다)

"마이러, 이제 털어놓아. 뭐가 널 괴롭히고 있는 거야?"

I got anxious. (I = anxious) "나는 걱정이 되었다."

We got married in 1970. (We = married) "우리는 1970년에 결혼했다."

He grew tired. (He = tired) "그는 점점 더 지치게 되었다."

The milk turned sour. (The milk = sour) "우유가 상해버렸다."

The dog turned out a mad one. (The dog = a mad one) "그 개는 미친개로 판명되었다."

cf. The dog turned out the beggar. (The dog ≠ the beggar) "그 개는 거지를 쫓아냈다."

cf. The factory turns out 20,000 bicycles a month. (생산하다; 배출하다)

The plan proved a failure. (The plan = a failure) "그 계획은 실패임이 판명되었다."

cf. I can prove that his answer is right. (I ≠ that 절 ) (3형식) "나는 그의 답이 옳다는 것을 입증할 수 있다."

The little girl knew that 24 hours make a day. (24 hours = a day) 

"꼬마 여자애는 24 시간이 하루가 된다는 것을 알았다."

Trifles loom large to an anxious mind. "하찮은 일이라도 걱정 많은 사람에겐 중대하게 여겨진다."
