[핵심 문법] 기타 정관사의 용법

(1) 'by' 뒤의 계량 단위 표시의 정관사

Sugar is sold by the pound.

계량 단위를 나타낼 때는 'by' 다음에 정관사가 사용된다. 탁 파운드가 되는 힘으로 팔린다는 뜻입니다.

Do they sell salt by the pound. "파운드로 설탕을 팝니까?"

In the USA we buy gasoline by the gallon. "미국에서는 갤런으로 석유를 산다."

This cloth is sold by the yard. "이 천은 야드로 팔린다."

A : How do you sell these eggs? "이 달걀들은 어떻게 팝니까?"

B : 4,000 won by *a dozen / *dozens / the dozen. "다스에 4,000 원입니다."

She works by the hour. "그녀는 시간제로 일합니다."

A : How do you get paid? "어떻게 급여를 받습니까?"

B : I'm paid by *weeks / *a week / the week. "주급으로 받습니다."

(2) the + (사회의) 유일 집단

the populace [pάpjuləs] : (서민, 민중) : (Italian popolo : people + -accio : 경멸적 접미사 → Italian poplaccio : common people → 16 세기말) [미국 영어 흔히 집합적 불가산 명사로 취급해서 흔히 단수 취급하나 복수로 사용되기도 한다.]

The populace has suffered greatly. "서민은 크게 고통을 받았다."

Their general populace is well dressed. "그들의 일반 서민은 옷을 잘 입는다."

The populace was so terrified of the tornado that whatever town she visited she found villages deserted of inhabitants and livestock. "서민은 토네이도에 아주 겁을 먹어서 어떤 도시에 토네이도가 입성하더라도 마을들에 주민들이나 가축들이 사라진 것을 겪게 됩니다."

the public : 일반 사람들, 민중, 대중 [집합적으로 덩어리를 강조하면 불가산 명사로 단수 취급이나 각 개인을 강조하는 군집 명사로 보면 복수 취급한다. 'the populace'와 같은 패턴이다.]

The public has a right to know about this. "민중은 이에 관해 알 권리가 있다."

The public wants tougher sentences for violent crimes. 

 

"대중은 폭력적인 범죄들에 대해 더 가혹한 판결을 원한다."

Members of the public were asked about their shopping habits. 

"일반 대중의 성원들은 쇼핑 습관에 관해 질문을 받았다."

All the public are welcome to attend. "모든 일반인들은 참석을 환영합니다."

군집 명사의 구성원들은 복수 취급한다. 

the elite [ilíːt, eilíːt] (선발된 사람들, 엘리트) : (L eligere : elect → F ellire : to elect → F elite : selection, choice, E elect) [역시 덩어리로 보면 불가산, 개별 구성원으로 보면 가산 명사.]

The global elite is finally getting used to Donald Trump. 

"세계의 엘리트는 도널드 트럼프에 결국 익숙해지고 있다."

The ruling elite have resisted all attempts at reform. "지배 엘린트들은 개혁의 모든 시도에 저항한 바 있다."

Brazil's political and business elite seem prepared to accept the election results.

"브라질의 정계와 재계의 엘리트들은 선거 결과를 받아 들일 준비가 되어 있는 것 같다."

the multitude [mΛltətjùːd] : 일반 대중, 민중, 서민 : the ordinary people who have no power or influence : (L multus : many) ['the multitude'는 'the public'과 같은 의미로는 용법이 같으나 'a multitude of ~'는 복수이다.]

Can you imagine what effect that will have on the multitude? 

"그게 대중에게 무슨 효과를 미치리라고 상상할 수 있습니까?"

cf. a multitude of = a very large number of people or things : 다수의 ~

(3) the + 상징 보통 명사

The bench consisted of a judge and three local politicians. (재판부)

"재판부는 판사 한 명과 세 명의 지방 정치인들로 이루어졌다."

The defense bar are using her own words as evidence to undermine the work of the DPS lab. (변호인단)

"변호인 단은 자기 자신들의 말을 DPS 랩의 연구를 해치는 증거로 사용하고 있다."

(4) 추상 명사를 대신하는 'the + 형용사'

추상 명사를 대신하며 단수로 취급한다.

Accomplish the impossible or experience the unthinkable. 

"불가능한 것을 달성하거나 생각할 수 없는 것을 경험하라."

The unexpected is bound to happen. "예기치 않은 일이 일어나게 돼어 있다."

She has an eye for the beautiful. "그녀는 심미안이 있다."

(5) 사물의 부분을 표시하는 'the +형용사'

But in reality he loves Naina from the deep of his heart. (그의 마음속으로는)

"하지만 실제로 그의 마음 속으로는 나이나를 사랑한다."

Have you ever been out walking at the dead of night? (한밤중에)

"넌 한밤중에 나가서 걸어본 적이 있어?"

I sailed to this icy land in the dead of winter. (한겨울에) "나는 한 겨울에 이 얼음같은 땅으로 항해했다."

the white of an egg :

A : What's the white of an egg called? (계란의 흰자위 = the yolk of an egg)

"달걀의 흰 부분은 뭐라고 불리는데?"

B : Albumen but most people refer to it as egg white. "알부민인데 대부분의 사람들은 겨란 흰자위라 칭하지."

What is the yellow of an egg called? "계란의 노른자위는 뭐라고 불리는데?"

(6) 'enough'의 'the'

특별한 목적으로 뭔가가 충분할 때 'enough'를 사용하기도 한다. : used when saying whether there is enough of something for a particular purpose

He didn't have the strength to go on fighting. (= enough) "그는 계속해서 싸울 충분한 힘이 없었다."

I'd like to start my own business - that's what I'd do if I had the money. (= enough)

"나는 내 사업을 시작하고 싶다. 그게 내가 돈이 (없어서 그렇지) 충분하다면 하고 싶은 일이다.

(7) 'such a'의 'the'

He is not the man to do a dishonest thing. (= such a) "그는 부정직한 짓을 할 그런 사람이 아니다."

(8) 'Italic the'

This is the life. "이것이 바로 인생이다."

He is the pianist of the day. "그는 당대의 첫째 가는 피아니스트다."

Caesar was the general of Rome. "카이사르는 로마의 최고가는 명장이다."

(9) 문학에서 쓰이는 독자의 친숙성을 유도하는 정관사

From beyond the screen of bushes which surrounded the spring, Popeye watched the man drinking. A faint path led from the road to the spring. Popeye watched the man - a tall, thin man, hatless, in worn gray flannel trouser and carrying a tweed coat under his arm - emerge from the path and kneel to drink at the spring.

"샘을 둘러싼 덤불 차폐물 너머로 부터 파파이(포파이)는 남자가 술 마시는 것을 보았다. 희미한 길이 길에서 샘으로 이어져 있었다. 파파이는 남자를 살폈다. 큰 키, 마른 몸매, 모자를 쓰지 않고, 낡은 회색 무명 바지에 팔아래 트위드 코트를 들고서 길에서 나타나서 무릎을 꿇고 물을 마시는 것을 보았다.

소설의 첫 문단에서 처음 나오는 데도 'the spring'을 쓰고 'the man'을 쓰는데 이 정관사는 공유 정보의 단절을 야기하는 것이 아니고 마치 독자도 아는 'spring'(샘)인 양 또 잘 아는 'man'(사람)인 양 독자를 이야기 속으로 친숙하게 이끌기 위해서 쓰는 정관사이다.
