#1.  ~ ~ Allan thought the young man should have been satisfied with finding the suitcase, which was standing right in the middle of the room. Julius grimaced but made no move to answer. Allan reflected that the old timber merchant was quite a tough guy, and looked around for a suitable weapon. Amid the junk he saw a small number of candidates; a crowbar, a plank, a container of insect spray, and a packet of rat poison. Allan first setlled (A)[      ] the rat poison but couldn't just then figure out a way to get a spoonful or two into the young man. The crowbar, on the other hand, was a bit too heavy for the centenarian to lift, and the insect spray. . . . No, it would have to be the plank.

#2. But Bernhard Lundborg was not the sort of man to involve himself in philosophical discussions with his patients; he repeated the question about Negro blood. Allan answered that you never really know, but both his parents had had skin that was as pale as his; perhaps the professor could settle (B)[      ] that as an answer? [#2. 해석] 하지만 베른하르트 룬드버그 교수는 자신의 환자들과 철학적인 논쟁을 하는 그런 종류의 사람이 아니었다. 그는 흑인 혈통에 대한 질문을 거듭했다. 알란은 당신은 모르지만 그의 부모님들도 자기처럼 하얀 피부라고 말했다. 어쩌면 이 교수는 그걸 아쉽지만 대답으로 받아들였을까요? 그리고 알란은 더하여 말했다. 교수님이 흑인이 한 명 있다면 정말로 흑인을 죽어라 보고 싶다고 말했다.

[해설]

[settle on]

~로 결정하다 : to decide on (something or doing something) [보통은 시간이 좀 걸린 후의 결정을 뜻한다.] ['settle'은 원래 'seat, place'의 뜻에서]

The band has yet to settle on a name. "그 밴드는 아직 이름을 결정하지 못하고 있어."

Have you settled on a name for the baby? "아기의 이름을 결정했어?'

At last Mary settled on blue paint for the bedroom. "마침내 메리는 침실에는 파란색 페인트로 결정했다."

The children could not settle on where to put the tent. "아이들은 텐트를 어디에 칠지 결정할 수 없었다."

It took some time, but Sarah and I finally settled on an appropriate price for the house.

"시간이 좀 걸렸지만 사라와 저는 결국 집의 합당한 가격을 결정했어요."

I can't settle on one or the other, so I'll buy both. "어느 한 쪽으로 결정할 수 없어서 둘 다 살 겁니다."

Have you settled / decided / determined  on spending your holiday at home?

"휴가를 집에서 보내기로 결정하셨어요?"

We've agreed on fighing the evil in society, now let's do something about it.

"우린 사회 악과 싸우기로 결정했어요. 자 뭔가 조처를 합시다."

'decide, determine, agree on'을 대신 사용하기도 한다.

[settle for]

마지못해 승낙하다, 아쉬운 대로 ~로 만족하다 : to accept (something or doing something less than one had hoped); to accept something in spite of not being completely satisfied

Although he was jumping so well, he failed to win the first prize and had to settle for the second.

"그는 점핑을 아주 잘 했지만 일등을 하지는 못 했고 아쉽지만 이등에 만족해야 했다."

He wants a full refund and he won't settle for anything less.

"그는 완전한 환불을 원한다. 그에 떨어지는 어떤 것에도 승낙하지 않을 것이다."

I had dreamed of being an author, but I settled for a job editing other people's manuscripts.

"나는 작가가 되려는 꿈을 꾸었지만 다른 사람들의 원고들을 편집하는 데 만족해야 했다."

They were hoping to sell their car for ￡2.000, but settled for ￡1,500.

"그들은 2,000 파운드에 차를 팔기를 희망했지만 1,500 파운드에 만족해야 했다."

The politician's wife has found it difficult to settle for playing a supporting part instead of living her own life.
