'애덤이라면 적절한 때가 되면 선정되겠지요.'의 뜻으로 가정법 조건이 'Adam'에 숨어 있고 'would have been chosen'은 '미래 완료'가 가정법으로 바뀌어서 가정법 귀결절로 사용된 것이다.

[take ~ into one's confidence]

비밀을 털어놓다[밝히다] : If you take someone into your confidence, you tell them a secret. ; To tell someone information with the understanding that they will not reveal what was said. [원래는 '누군가를 자신의 비밀 속으로 데려간다'라는 뜻인데 '비밀을 털어놓다'로 의역한 것이다.]

He was one of the few that she took into her confidence about how the story would develop.

"그는 그녀가 얘기가 어떻게 진전되었는지에 대해 비밀을 털어놓은 몇 안되는 사람들 중의 한 명이었다."
