주절의 주어와의 동일 주어 원칙에 무관하게 사용되는 독립 구문이 있는데 'put'의 경우에는 'to put it this way' > putting it this way > put this way'의 빈도로 사용된다. 능동일 때는 '표현하다'의 뜻으로 목적어 'it'가 사용되어야 한다. 한 칸에 사용될 수 있는 것은 과거 분사인 'Put'뿐이다.
