[핵심 문법] 'so ~ that' 상관 접속법

'so'와 'that'이 짝을 이뤄 ‘너무나 ~해서 ~하다’로 해석할 때 이를 ‘so ~ that ~ 상관 접속법'이라 한다.

"모든 것이 너무 많이 변해서 난 그곳을 거의 알아볼 수가 없었다."

뒤의 'that'은 생략되기도 한다. 앞의 'so'는 생략할 수 없다.

종속절을 주절화시켜서 앞에 위치시키고 'comma'를 사용할 때는 당연히 앞에 'that'을 쓰지 않는다.

정답 - B : [so] → [such] : 'so'는 명사가 있을 때는 ‘so 형용사 a 명사’ 이외는 쓰일 수가 없다. 따라서 불가산 명사와도 쓰일 수 없고 복수 명사와도 쓰일 수 없다. 'such'는 그런 제한이 없다. '*so different surgical skills'는 쓸 수 없고 'such different surgical skills'로 바꿔야 한다.

[해석] 신체의 다양한 부위들은 아주 상이한 수술 기술들이 필요하기 때문에 많은 수술 전문 분야들이 생겨났다.

'so'는 복수 명사형과 연결되지 못한다.

'weather'는 불가산 명사로 부정관사 사용은 곤란하다.

부정관사가 없는 경우는 'so'를 사용할 수 없다.

'such'는 불가산 명사와 사용될 수 있다.

'many, few, much, little'이 있으면 'so'를 쓴다.

 

2) 단독형

'so'는 단독으로 'be 동사'의 보어가 되지 못한다.

Human nature is such that ~

'such'는 단독으로 쓰일 때 ‘지독한, 형편없어서; 대단한’의 뜻이다.

"생활 수준은 너무나 형편없어서 한 단에 300 달러 버는 사람은 부자로 간주되었다."
