[해석] 문학적인 주제에 대한 그림들이 19세기 영국에서 아주 인기가 높았던 것을 생각할 때 미술이 문학에 미치는 영향에 관한 질문들은 더욱더 적절해진다.

 

[핵심 문법] 'the 비교급'과 다른 어구의 상관 구조

'the 비교급'은 상관 구조이므로 짝을 이뤄 쓰여야 하는데 주절에 해당되는 쪽만 'the 비교급'을 사용하고 다른 쪽은 '이유의 because 절', 또는 '교환, 대가, 이유를 나타내는 부사구'가 대신 쓰이는 경우가 있다.

I like him all the more because he has a few faults. "결점이 있기 때문에 그만큼 더 사랑한다."

He worked all the harder, because his master praised him. 

"주인이 칭찬했기 때문에 (비례해서) 도리어 그만큼 더 열심히 일했다."

'all the'는 '도리어'나 '더욱더'로 해석한다.

I came to understand him the better for it. "그로 인해 그를 더 잘 이해하게 되었다."

The house was in a state the worse for earthquake. "집은 지진 때문에 더 형편없이 되었다."

 

여기서 전치사 'for'는 원래는 '비례나 교환'의 뜻인데 결국 '원인'에 해당한다고 볼 수 있다.

He is none the better for his experience. "경험에도 불구하고 나 진 게 없다."

 

직역하면 '경험으로 인해(= for his experience) 더 나아지지(= the better) 않은(= none)'인데 의역하면 'for' 이하를 양보(~에도 불구하고)로 해석하게 된다. 'none'은 본시 'ne(not) + an(one)'의 뜻이다.

Luckily, the horse seemed none the worse for his fall. "다행스럽게도 말은 쓰러졌음에도 괜찮아 보였다."

손상되지 않은; 때론 아이러니하게도 더 나은 : not damaged, harmed, or made worse by something. Sometimes used ironically to indicate that someone or something would be improved by doing something.

I was worried that the team would be in a sorry state the morning after the company holiday party, but we were none the worse for a night of drinking and dancing. "회사 명절 파티 후, 다음날 아침 팀이 곤혹스러운 상황이 될 거라고 걱정했지만 우리는 하룻밤 마시고 춤을 추었음에도 끄떡없었다."

He's lost some weight but he's none the worse (= he's better) for it. "그는 살이 좀 빠졌지만 더 좋아 보였다." [나빠지지 않으면 좋은 거죠.]

You know, your smelly old jacket would be none the worse for a trip through the washing machine.

"알지, 네 냄새나는 재킷 세탁기에 돌린다고 망가질 거 없는 거."

She's been traveling constantly for the past several weeks, but she seems to be none the worse for wear.

"그녀는 지난 몇 주 동안 계속해서 여행 중이지만 피곤해 하지도 않았다."

The dog would be none the worse for a good brushing. "거 강아지 솔질해주면 더 보기 좋을 거야."

My tutor has explained the quadratic equation to me many times, but I'm still none the wiser.

"과외 선생님이 그 이차방정식을 여러 번 설명해 주셨지만 나는 여전히 이해가 안 된다."

I read the computer manual, but I'm still none the wiser. "매뉴얼을 읽었지만 난 여전히 뭐가 뭔지 모르겠다."

He'd published four volumes of work on the subject but having talked to him, I was none the wiser. 

"그 문제에 대해 책을 네 권이나 낸 그와 얘기해봤어도 난 이해가 안 되었다." [ㅎ 나진 게 없었다.]

The restaurant replaced the lobster with crab and the customers were none the wiser.

"레스토랑은 랍스터를 게로 대체했지만 손님들은 눈치도 못 채고 있었다." 

I got the answers to the test ahead of time but the teacher was none the wiser. 

"난 시험 답안을 미리 갖고 있었지만 선생님은 전혀 몰랐다."

The investigation has been going on for months, and we're still none the wiser about the true cause of the accident.

직역하면 '결점으로 인해 그만큼 덜(= the less) (사랑하지는) 않다(= none)'인데 의역하면 'for 이하'를 양보(~에도 불구하고)로 'none the less'를 '여전히'로 해석한다.

주의할 점은 'the 비교급' 앞에는 'no'를 쓰면 안 되고 'none'을 써야 한다는 점이다.

He had some faults, but was loved none the less. "결점이 있었지만 그래도 사랑을 받았다."

He had some faults, but was not loved the less.

He had some faults, but was loved *no the less.

정상적인 부정의 위치에서 'not'을 사용할 수 있지만 'no'는 사용할 수 없다.

Although he sometimes lost his temper, his pupils liked him no less for it. 

"그는 때로 화를 내지만 학생들은 그래도 여전히 그를 좋아했다.'

드물게 'no less'를 사용하기도 한다.

Press magnates seldom conceal their political loyalty; they openly campaign for their preferred party and no one thinks the less of them for being rewarded with titles or ambassadorship. 

"언론 재벌은 자신들의 정치적 충성을 거의 감추지 않는다. 이들은 좋아하는 정당을 위해 공개적으로 선거 운동을 하고 그로 인해서 자리나 대사직을 보상으로 받는다고 이들이 폄하되지 않는다."

주어에 'no'가 붙은 경우는 아무런 문제가 없다.

The patient's condition was never the better for the operation. 

"환자의 상태는 수술받고도 조금도 나아지지 않았다."

'never the 비교급'은 '조금도 ~않다'의 뜻으로 쓰인다.

A : It's a bit early to send a child of ten to bed. "10 살 아이를 잠자리에 보내기에 좀 이른 거같다."

B : She'll go when I tell her to, nonetheless. "그럼에도 내가 가서 자라고 하면 그때 갈 거야."

There was no news; nevertheless, she went on hoping. 

"아무런 소식도 없었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그녀는 계속 기대했다."

'none the less'와 'never the less'는 두 개의 절 또는 두 문장에서 접속 부사로 쓰일 수 있으며 'nonetheless'와 'nevertheless'로 붙여서 쓸 수도 있다.

I took a good rest, and feel the better. "푹 쉬어서 그만큼 더 기분이 좋다."

 

등위 접속사인 'and'가 쓰인 경우로 앞의 절이 원인에 해당된다.

The play was impressive —(all) the more so because the students had written it themselves.

"연극은 인상적이었다. 학생들이 직접 대본을 써서 더욱 인상적이었다."

'so'는 'impressive'을 대신하는 대형태고 'because 절'과 상관되고 있다.

I'm extremely angry with James for telling you this, and the more so in that he'd promised me that he wouldn't. (so = angry) "난 제임스에게 아주 화나 있어. 이걸 네게 말해서 말이야. 그리고 그가 나에게 그러지 않겠다고 약속했었기에 너 많이 화가 났어."

'in that'(~라는 점에서)가 상관되고 있다.

He will like you none the worse if you tell the truth. "네가 진실을 말한다 해도 그는 여전히 널 사랑할 거야."

These are all the more important when all eyes of an audience are upon you. 

"모든 청중의 눈들이 네게 집중될 때 이것들은 그만큼 더 중요하다."

She is none the better for taking those pills. "그녀는 거 약들을 먹었어도 나아진 게 없다."

양보에 해당하는 부분이 'if 절, when 절, 동명사'로 온 경우이다.

I like him none the less on account of his failure. "그의 실패로 그를 더 좋아한다." 

We became the more intimate, there being many resemblances of character between us.

"우리는 그만큼 더 친밀해졌다. 우리들은 성격상 많은 유사점이 있어서."

'on account of'나 분사 구문이 쓰이는 경우도 있다.
