대조동사를 사용한 후에 원형 이하 반복되는 것을 그냥 써서는 안 된다.

Sam kicked the ball harder than Dennis did.

대조동사(기능사)를 사용하면 원형 이하 반복되는 것은 생략되었음을 표시할 수 있다.

I spend more than my friends do.

I와 'my friends'가 비교되고 있다.

I spend more than my friends think that I should.

'than' 다음에 'my friends'가 나올 때는 'my friends'가 비교 대상인 것 같지만 뒤에 'think 이하'가 따라서 결국은 'my friends'가 비교 대상이 아니게 된다.

I spend more than do my friends.

비교 종속절에 주어와 기능사만 남아있는 경우 주어-기능사 도치를 시켜놓으면 그 뒤에 바로 비교 대상이 따름을 쉽게 전달할 수 있는 장점이 있다.

I spend more than she did. / *did she.

비교 종속절의 주어가 대명사이면 주어-기능사 도치를 시킬 수 없다.

'as('(양태 접속사 : ~듯이) wheat, barley, rye, and all our grains are(기능사)'의 구조이면 신정보인 주어를 뒤로 보내는 주어-기능사 도치가 흔히 발생한다. → as are(기능사) wheat, ~ , and all our grains : '~듯이, ~처럼'의 뜻으로 쓰이는 양태의 종속절에서도 'as' 다음에 주어가 나오고 기능사로 끝나면 흔히 주어-기능사 도치를 시킨다.

A, B, D : 접속사 없이 두 개의 절이 연결될 수 없다.

[해석] 옥수수는 볏과의 식물이다. 밀과 보리와 호밀과 우리의 모든 곡물들도 그렇지만.

[핵심 문법] 양태절의 도치

'~처럼, 듯이'로 해석하는 접속사 'as'를 '양태의 as'라고 한다.

양태 접속사 뒤에서도 주어와 기능사만 남아있으면 흔히 주어-기능사 도치가 발생된다.

Hares do not dig burrows as European rabbits do. "산토끼는 유럽 토끼와 달리 굴을 파지 않는다."

한 쪽에 부정 어구가 있으면 'as'는 '달리'로 해석하는 것이 원칙이다.

Pure iron cannot be hardened by heating and cooling, as can steel, because iron lacks the necessary carbon.

"순철은 가열과 냉각으로 단단하게 만들 수 없다. 강철과는 다르다. 철에는 필요한 탄소가 없기 때문이다."

'just as'나 'as'의 양태 접속사가 쓰인 후에 주절 쪽에도 'so(마찬가지로)'가 쓰인 후에 주어-기능사 도치가 흔히 발생한다.

앞쪽 'as'와 상관된 경우 뒤의 'so' 다음에는 'too'가 쓰이기도 한다.

종속절에 '주어 + 기능사'만 남은 경우 주어가 대명사가 아닌 경우에는 흔히 주어-기능사 도치가 발생할 수 있다.

(?)She was as delighted with the suggestion as was he. "그녀는 그 만큼이나 그 제안에 기뻐했다."

They go to concerts frequently, as do I. "그들은 자주 콘서트에 갔다. 나도 그렇지만." (양태)

동등 비교의 경우에는 드물게 대명사인 경우에도 주어-기능사 도치가 발생하기도 하지만 그것도 '주절의 as'가 생략된 경우에만 완전히 옳은 것으로 여겨진다.
