[해설]

1. 'couldn't'과 함께 쓰여 의미상 긍정의 최상급이 되려면 'more'가 사용되어야 한다.

2. I am happy that you are here.

이런 경우 'that 절'은 '형용사의 보어(넓은 의미에서)'라고 합니다. 'I believe that ~'에서 'that 절'을 동사의 목적어(넓은 의미에서 목적어도 일종의 보어)라고 하는 것과 마찬가지입니다. 의미상 최상급이고 비교와 상관없이 'that 절'이 따라야 합니다.

3. 형태는 같지만 내가 한 것이 아니므로 '가정법 과거 완료'이고 빈칸에는 'myself'가 사용되어야 합니다.

I can't agree more. = I completely agree with what was said so I can not agree more than that. (I agree the most.)

훨씬 적은 빈도지만 'can't 비교급'을 사용하기도 한다.

I couldn't agree more. "전적으로 동의한다."

'can'보다 '적은 가능성인 could'를 부정한 'couldn't'은 강한 부정을 나타내는데 훨씬 더 많이 쓰인다.

couldn't agree more : 전적으로 동의하다 : agree completely with, approve of, an opinion expressed by somebody else

What is the meaning of 'I couldn't agree more?' : To completely agree with someone. This is the highest level of agreeing with someone because they can't agree more than they do.  ['더 많이 동의할 수 없다'라는 것은 '전적으로 동의한다' 또는 '가장 많이 동의한다'라는 뜻이다. 이를 '의미상 긍정 최상급'이라 하기도 한다.]

Bob says it's the government's fault, and I couldn't agree more. 

"밥은 그건 정부의 잘못이라고 말하는데 나는 전적으로 동의한다."

couldn't agree less : 전적으로 의견이 다르다 : completely disagree

I couldn't agree less. You must be joking. "난 전적으로 의견이 다르다. 너 농담하는 거지."

You could not ask for better weather. "더 좋은 날씨를 바라는 건 불가능하다." → "최고의 날씨다."

= The weather could not be better. "날씨는 더 좋을 수 없다."

= It is such fine weather.

= The weather is terrific. "날씨 죽여 주네." ['terrible'은 나쁜 날씨에나 사용된다.]

= The weather is fantastic. "날씨 환상적이다."

A : How are you? "요즘 어때요?"

B : Oh, couldn't be better! My job is great, and I just bought a house! 

"오, 더 좋을 수가 없어. (최고로 좋아.) 일 좋고 막 집도 샀어."

John : How are things going? "요즘 상황이 어때?"

Jane : Couldn't be better. "상황 더 좋을 수가 없어. (최고로 좋아.)

Oh, the project couldn't be better--we're actually ahead of schedule. 

"오, 프로젝트 최고로 잘 나가. 우린 사실상 예정보다 앞서가고 있어."

A : I think the bed is the most uncomfortable in England ― in Barsetshire at any rate. 

"내 생각에 그 침대는 영국에서 가장 불편한 침대야. 적어도 바셋셔 지방에서는."

B : It certainly couldn't be more hideous. It beats the state bed at Gatherum Castle hollow. 

"가장 불쾌한 침대야. 개더럼 성의 공식용 침대도 이길 거야."

The boss says, "How's everything going?" Dilbert says, "It couldn't be worse." Dilbert says, "I was the only one who said this project is a bad idea.""모든 게 어때요?"라고 사장이 말한다.  "모든 게 최악이에요."라고 딜버트는 말한다. "제가 이 프로젝트는 좋지 않은 생각이라고 말했던 유일한 사람이었지요."

I couldn't care less. "더 적게 신경 쓸 수 없다." → "전혀 신경 쓰지 않는다."

= I don't give a shit.

​But even if Chou En Lai cared about Asian reactions, it is possible that his colleagues could not care less and are bent simply on the increase of Chinese might. "하지만 비록 주은래는 아시안의 반발을 걱정할지 몰라도 아마도 그의 동료들은 전혀 신경 쓰지 않고 그저 중국의 힘을 증대시키는 것에 열중할 것이다."

모국어 화자들이 간혹 'could care less'로 잘못 사용할 때도 있는데 우린 그저 'couldn't care less(전혀 신경 안 쓴다)'로 이해하면 그만이다.

Stupid: "Pfft, I could care less about that".

I'mWithStupid: ":You mean you *couldn't* care less. To say you could care less means you care at least a little. You're stupid, Stupid."

Stupid: "No, I was being sarcastic, *obviously*."

I'mWithStupid: "That doesn't even make sense."

Stupid: "Well, it's been used since the 1960s so it must be right!"

I'mWithStupid: "The fact that you still haven't corrected a mistake made by an idiot that long ago just makes you look *more stupid*."

Stupid: "... What were we talking about again?"

I'mWithStupid: "I couldn't care less..."

멍청이 : "퍽, 난 그거에 대해 'could care less'야".

멍청이 상대방 : "너 'couldn't care less'를 의미하는 거지. 'could care less'는 '적어도 조금은 신경 쓴다'라는 뜻이야. 멍청하네, 멍청이야."

멍청이 : "아니야, 분명히 말하는데 난 비꼬아서 말했던 거야."

멍청이 상대방 : "그건 말도 안 된다."

멍청이 : "뭐, 이 말은 1960년대 이래로 사용되어 왔으니 틀림없이 옳은 표현이야!"

멍청이 상대방 : "그렇게 오래전에 어떤 바보가 한 잘못을 네가 아직도 고치지 못했다는 사실은 정말 너를 더 멍청하게 보이게 만들고 있네."

멍청이 : "... 우리가 뭐에 대해 얘기하고 있는 중이었지?"

멍청이 상대방 : "I couldn't care less... (난 전혀 관심 없다.)"

The whole family has met her already and I couldn't be happier. 

"온 가족이 그녀를 만났고 나는 지금 가장 행복하다."

"I'm afraid I've been boring you," he said. "with all this talk about the office." And his two listeners, though too polite to say so, couldn't have agreed more.

"'회사에 대한 이 모든 얘기로 당시들을 지루게 했을 것 같네요.'라고 그는 말했다. 그리고 말을 듣고 있었던 두 사람은 공손하게 구느라 그렇다고 말을 못했지만 전적으로 동의했었다."

★ couldn't 뒤에 'have PP'가 따르면 과거(드물게 현재 완료)에 대한 얘기이다.

I couldn't have had less fun on our date. = I had so little fun, it would've been impossible to have less fun. "난 우리 데이트 재미 꽝이었어."

I couldn't have been happier. = I was so happy that I reached maximum happiness. "나는 가장 행복했었다."

While we have not enjoyed the experience of the problem, we can't have been happier with your assistance and guidance throughout it all. Thank you so much. "어려움을 겪는 것을 즐기지는 않았지만 그 일 내내 당신의 도움과 안내를 받아서 가장 행복했습니다. 매우 감사합니다."

아주 드물게 'can't have PP'가 쓰인 경우인데 'couldn't have PP'를 사용하는 것이 바람직하다.

The evening, Gephart later remarked, "could not have been more surreal".  

저녁은 "최고로 초현실적이었다."라고 게파트는 후일 말했다.

nothing is / can be farther from one's mind / thoughts than ~ : ~가 가장 동떨어진 것이다; ~할 마음은 전혀 없다
