    I thought she was going to spit in it, which was the only reason anybody in Maycomb held out his hand: it was a time-honored method of sealing oral contracts. Wondering what bargain we had made, I turned to the class for an answer, but the class looked back at me in puzzlement. Miss Caroline picked up her ruler, gave me half a dozen quick pats, then told me to stand in the corner. A storm of laughter broke loose when it finally occurred to the class that Miss Caroline had whipped me.

    "그녀가 손에 침을 뱉을 거라고 생각했다. 그건 메이컴에서 누구든 손을 내미는 유일한 이유였었기 때문이었다. 그건 말로 한 계약에 도장을 찍는 오랫동안 존중되어온 방법이었다. 우리가 무슨 약속을 한 건지 궁금해서 저는 반 애들을 쳐다보았다. 하지만 애들은 당황하며 나를 쳐다보았다. 캐롤라인 선생님은 자를 들어서 빠르게 6 번 때리고는 구석에 가서 서 있으라고 했다. 애들이 캐롤라인 선생님이 나를 때렸다는 것을 결국 알게 되었을 때 폭풍 같은 웃음이 터져 나왔다.

조어법으로 보면 'as a'를 삭제하고 'stock'을 앞으로 보내서 만들어진다.

On seeing us, the deer stood stock-still for a moment, then turned and retreated into the forest.
