  "And it's still going on?"

  Parris paused as the waitress returned with a third martini. He stared at his drink, as if weighing the wisdom of dumping any more alcohol into his bloodstream. At last he picked it up. "No. The weird stuff stopped happening around the same time the case ran out of (A)[    ]. Government agencies we were working with--NTSB, FBI--told me their investigation was at a standstill. I guess they had other priorities. It all went quiet. The strange vans went away, and my life went back to normal. Then, a few weeks ago, I heard from the New Hampshire police about the Temples' farmhouse, blown up with Semtex." He paused. "Now you're here. And I'm just waiting for the vans to show up again."

"이제 당신들이 이곳에 와 있네. 그리고 난 그 밴들이 다시 모습을 나타내기를 기다리고 있죠."

fish for ~ : ~을 노리다, 알아내다 : to seek some kind of information; 더듬어 찾다 : to group around for something with one's hands

You could tell the lawyer was fishing for something from the vague way she asked the questions. 

"당신은 그녀가 질문을 하는 모호한 것에서 변호사가 뭔가를 알아내려 하고 있었음을 알 수 있다."

[run out of steam]

힘(기력)이 빠지다, 탈진하다 : to lose the energy, power, etc., that one formerly possessed

A ran out of steam : 'run'은 2형식 변화형 동사입니다. 변화가 되면 'A was out of steam', 즉 'A'는 'steam'이 없는 상태가 되는 것입니다. 스팀은 증기 기관의 'steam'과 같은 뜻으로 '힘, 기력'을 뜻합니다.

steam : 스팀, 수증기, 김, 힘, 기력

After spending hours working on this project, I'm running out of steam—can we take a break?

"이 프로젝트에 몇 시간을 들이고 나니 힘이 빠지네요. 우리 잠깐 쉬어도 돼죠?"
