[ y ≯ x = 10 ]의 관계이므로 [ y ≤ 10 ]과 같고 'y'의 최대값이 10이므로 'at most'(가장 큰 데서 → 기껏해야)와 같은 뜻이 된다.

[ y ≮ x = 10 ]의 관계이므로 [ y ≥ 10 ]과 같고 'y'의 최소값이 10이므로 'at least'(가장 작은 데서 → 적어도)와 같은 뜻이 된다.

맨날 부등식을 전환하고 있을 수는 없으므로 다음처럼 간단히 암기한다.

'not more than'은 ★'at (the) most' [기껏해야] 되고 'not less than'은 ★'at (the) least'[적어도]가 된다.

1) [not more than]

There are beautiful mountains not more than ten minutes' drive away.

"운전해서 기껏해야 5 분 거리에 아름다운 산들이 있다."

It's a beautiful cottage not more than five minutes from the nearest beach. 

"그곳은 가장 가까운 해변에서 기껏해야 5 분 떨어진 오두막이다."

★ 정확한 수를 아는 경우 : 'no more than ~'과 'no less than ~'

I have no more than two dollars. (비절 비교)  "나는 단지/ 겨우 / 고작 2달러밖에 없다."

= I have only as much as two dollars.

He has no less than 10 children. (비절 비교)  "그는 어린애가 10명이나 있다."

= He has as many as 10 children.

'비절 비교'로 쓰일 때 'no more'는 '많지 않다' 의미로 ★'단지', '고작','겨우','밖에'의 뜻으로 쓰이고 'no less'는 '적지 않다'라는 의미로 ★'만큼이나', '(씩)이나'의 뜻으로 쓰인다.

1) [no more than]

Each box requires no more than a few hours of labor to build.

격식체에서는 'no less than' 대신 'no fewer than'을 사용하기도 한다."

'less'에 바로 '가산 명사'가 이어지는 표현은 의문시된다.

'가산 명사'가 따른 경우로 'fewer'를 쓰고 있다.

No less than fifty people were killed in the accident. "그 사고로 50 명이나 죽었다."

하지만 '비절 비교'인 경우 비격식체에서는 뒤에 '가산 명사'가 따르더라도 'less'를 쓰는 경우가 더 많다.
