정답 - A : 'suggest'가 행동에 관한(구속형) 것이므로 원형이나 'should 원형'을 사용해야 한다.

[해석] 약간의 토론 후에 클럽 회장이 다음 협의회에서 다른 회원들을 만나보라는 제안이 있었다.

 

[핵심 문법] suggest와 suggestion

① suggest

I just suggested that you also see his point of view.

suggest가 '~할 것을 제안 또는 권유하는' 청유 동사일 때는 '(should) 원형'을 사용한다.

A : Tom really hurt Mary's feelings.   B : I know. I suggested that he apologize to her.

A : "톰은 메리의 감정을 정말로 해쳤다."  B : "알아. 난 그에게 그녀에게 사과할 것을 제안했다."

The statesman suggested that the sales tax be cut down by 2% next year.

"그 정치인은 영업세를 내년에 2% 삭감할 것을 제안했다."

She suggested to Gisela Rossi that her son audition for Gustave Landau ― a former soloist in Vienna. "그녀는 기셀라 로시에게 아들을 전직 비엔나의 솔로이스트인 구스타프 란도에게 오디션을 받아 보라고 권유했다."

Do you suggest that I am lying? "내가 거짓말을 하고 있다는 말인가?"

Do you suggest that I *be lying? 

'suggest'가 '~일 것이라고 암시, 시사, 넌지시 말하는(= imply)' 화법 동사면 직설법을 사용해야 한다. 이 경우엔 '(should) 원형'을 사용하면 '내가 거짓말하고 있는 중일 것을 제안하는 것이니?'라는 이상한 뜻이 되어서 곤란하다.

Some studies suggest that eating a good breakfast improves / *improve performance on tests.

"좋은 아침을 먹는 것이 테스트 점수를 향상시킨다고 하는 연구들도 좀 있다."

The doctor suggested that my baby was infected with influenza.

"그 의사는 내 아기가 인플루엔자에 감염되었다고 넌지시 말했다."

cf. Jake suggested *to leave / leaving the technical matters to the engineers to discuss.

"제이크는 기술적인 문제들은 토론을 엔지니어들에게 맡길 것을 권했다."

'suggest'는 목적어로 동명사를 취한다.

② suggestion

He made the suggestion that we join the club. "그는 우리가 그 클럽에 가입하라는 제안을 했다."

I have another idea to replace your suggestion that we should abolish the contract with the S Company.

"우리가 S 회사와의 그 계약을 파기해야 한다는 당신의 제안을 대체하는 다른 아이디어가 제가 있습니다."

'suggestion'이 '행동에 대한 제안'이면 '(should) 원형'을 사용한다.

The suggestion that he is a champion of justice and human rights is therefore preposterous.

"그가 정의와 인권의 수호자라는 말은 그러므로 뒤죽박죽이다."

The suggestion that an error has been made, that there has been a mistake, is like a cut to the bone in a criminal trial. "과오가 있었다는 말, 즉 실수가 있었다는 말은 형사 재판에서 뼈를 자르는 것과 같다."

'suggestion'이 '~라는 말, 암시, 시사' 등의 뜻이면 직설법을 사용한다.

정답 - D : [depend] → [depends] : 'suggests'가 '시사하다'의 뜻이므로 뒤에 직설법이 따라야 하는데 동명사(getting good grades)가 주어이므로 단수 일치형을 써야 한다.

[해석] 학습 연구는 좋은 성적을 얻는 것은 높은 IQ보다 효과적인 학습 요령에 더 달려있다고 한다.

정답 - B : (a)의 경우는 사실을 주장하는 인식형이므로 직설법으로 과거형을 써야 하고 (b)의 경우는 수업료를 낮춰야 한다는 구속형이므로 명령 관련 가정법에 해당되므로 '원형'이나 'should 원형'을 사용해야 하는데 수동이므로 'be lowered'가 맞다.

[해석] (a) 티모시는 여전히 친구들의 마음을 상하게 하는 어떤 나쁜 짓도 하지 않았다고 주장한다.

(b) 대부분의 학생들은 대학 등록금을 즉각적으로 내려야 한다고 주장한다.

 

[핵심 문법] insist, be insistent, insistence

① 청유 동사 insist

They all insisted that she *has / have dinner with them. "그들 모두는 그녀가 함께 식사할 것을 요구했다."

'insist'가 행동에 대해 ‘~할 것을 요구하다(= require), 강요하다’의 뜻이면 '(should) 원형'을 사용한다.

My father always insisted that his children be self-reliant.

"제 아버지는 자기 아이들이 자립할 것을 요구한다."

② insist 직설법

He insists that his brother is innocent. "그는 자기 형이 무죄라고 주장한다."

He insists that his brother *be / *should be innocent.  "그는 자기 형은 죄가 없다고 주장한다."

'insist'가 '~이 사실이라고 주장하다(assert), 역설하다'의 뜻이면 직설법을 사용한다. '원형'을 쓰면 '그는 자기 형이 무죄 되는 행동을 할 것을 요구한다.'라는 이상한 뜻이 되어서 곤란하다.

A : Do you think Carla is guilty or innocent? "넌 칼라가 유죄 아니면 무죄라고 생각하니?"

B : She insists that she didn't take the money. (직설법) "그녀는 자신이 돈을 가져가지 않았다고 주장한다."

I insisted that he (should) change his clothes. '갈아입을 것을 요구' (청유 동사)

I insisted that he changed his clothes. '갈아입었다고 주장' (직설법)

Jack insists that we visit that place. (청유 동사)

= Jack strongly recommends our visiting that place at some time in the future.

Jack insists that we have visited that place. (직설법)

= Jack expresses his certainty that we have been at that place before.

③ be insistent

George is insistent that the witnesses be truthful.

'be insistent' 다음에 원형이 쓰인 경우이다.

Foreman argues that Quidd is merely a drug addict, but House is insistent that the patient suffers from so many symptoms that it has to be something else making him sick. "퀴드는 그저 마약 중독자에 불과하다고 주장하지만 하우스는 환자를 아프게 하는 다른 뭔가가 있는 아주 많은 증상들을 겪고 있다고 주장한다."

'be insistent' 다음에 직설법이 쓰인 경우이다.

④ insistence

One sticky issue is North Korea's insistence that it be allowed to pursue a peaceful nuclear energy program. 

(허용되어야 한다는 주장) 

"한 가지 까다로운 문제는 핵에너지 프로그램을 추구하도록 허용되어야 한다는 북한의 주장이다."

Despite Kinkade's insistence that he is a Christian painter, his religious art does not appear overtly religious. 

(사실이라는 주장) "자신이 기독교 화가임이 사실이라는 킨케이드의 주장에도 불구하고 그의 종교적인 예술은 겉으로는 종교적으로 보이지 않았다."

In thirty seconds he explained about Danny's mole and the reasons why he would never have had it removed. About his private meeting with Marsciano in Gasparri's office, and the cardinal's insistence that the body was his brother's and that he accept the fact and get out of the country with it while he could. (동생의 시체인 것이 사실이며 사실로 받아들이고 떠나라는 주장)

한 번은 직설법이 쓰이고 한 번은 원형이 쓰인 경우이다.
