[해석] 우리 아버지는 오리건 주립대학의 지질학 교수이다. 세인트 헬렌스 산이 분출했을 때 그는 화산에 대해 계속 질문을 받았다. 다시 분출 하게 되나요? 화산재가 도시까지 올까요? 아버지의 전공은 지질학의 다른 분야이기 때문에 이런 질문들에 대답하기가 어려웠다. 나는 해결책이 떠올랐고 아버지께 뒤에는 "지질학자" 그리고 앞에는 "화산을 전공하지 않아요."라고 적힌 티셔츠를 보냈다.

 

[핵심 문법] 화법

(1) 직접 화법(Quoted or direct speech)

He laid down his bundle and thought of his misfortune. "And just what pleasure have I found, since I came into this world?" he asked.

(2) 간접 화법(Reported or normal indirect speech)

He laid down his bundle and thought of his misfortune. He asked himself what pleasure he had found since he came into the world.

(3) 자유 간접 화법(Free indirect speech)

He laid down his bundle and thought of his misfortune. And just what pleasure had he found, since he came into this world?

작중 인물의 생각이나 말을 "he said"나 "he thought" 또는 "he asked"와 같은 전달 동사 없이 자유롭게 전달하는 간접 화법으로 문장 구조나 지시사는 직접 화법을 따르고 인칭 대명사는 간접 화법을 따른다. Jane Austin, Flaubert, James Joyce, Virginia Wolf 등의 작품에서 처음 시도되었다.

She thought, "I will stay here tomorrow". (직접 화법)

She thought that she would stay there the next day. (간접 화법)

She would stay here tomorrow. (자유 간접 화법)

"Should I chase the criminal or help the victim?" (직접 화법)

He asked himself whether he should chase the criminal or help the victim. (간접 화법)

A : 근거 제시의 등위 접속사인 'for'는 뒤에 절이 따르지만 직접적인 원인을 나타내지 못한다.

이 문장에서 보듯이 'for'는 보충적인 이유의 제시일 뿐이다.

[해석] ⌜암살자⌟란 책에서 무수한 잔인한 기병들이 수백 만 명의 사람들을 살해한다. 숨은 뜻은 "그리스도를 받아들이고 구원을 받든지 아니면 응분의 처벌을 받으라."는 것이다. 하지만 독자들이 이 책들을 산 이유가 신에 대한 사랑 때문인지, 무신앙에 따른 두려움 때문인지 뭐 이도 저도 아니면 이 책들이 정말 재미있는 것들이기 때문인지는 알기가 어렵다.
