#1. "Oh, it's the old snowball's chance in the (A)[ ] adage."

"Then we'll have to try something else."

"I'm game."

He slid a lazy glance in her direction. "I remember."

Shelby's heart slammed against her rib cage. What the hell was he doing, flirting with her, kissing her, coming on to her? "Then let's get to it," she said, pretending not to notice the corded muscles in his shoulders, his tanned, bare chest and tight washboard of (B)[ ] abdomen. Nor would she react to the thatch of dark hair that arrowed down past his navel to burrow beneath the waistband of jeans that hung far too low on his hips. "And put something on, would you?

1. (A) : hell 2. (B) : an

not have a snowball's chance in hell :

a snowball's chance in hell : little to no likelihood of occurrenc or sucsess

That small boat has a snowball's chance in hell of surviving the hurricane.

L adagium : ad-(before) + -agium(akin to aio : I say)

game [geim] : (비격식) [~할] 용기[투지, 의지]가 있는(willing) I'm game for[to do] it.

come on to ~ : ~에게 작업을 걸다 corded : [근육·혈관 등이] (끈처럼) 융기한, 불거진

뒤의 'what the hell'에서 hell을 찾아내면 된다.

the old [snowball's chance in the hell] adage ← the old adage of snowball's chance in hell.

(B) 탱탱한 빨래판 같은 배 → tight washboard of an abdomen : 피 동격부 앞에 부정관사 'an'이 쓰여야 한다.

'an angel of a girl'과 같은 유형이다.

Man, I can’t get over how big Abraham is. It’s a bigger shock than when Armando Estrada hung up his suit and laced up his boots to show off his washboard of an abdomen.

(3) of 동격

[of 동격]

1) the N of 고유명사

Rome is a city.

~ the city (that I mean) is Rome

~ the city of Rome [*로마의 그 시 /로마라는 시 -> 로마시]

The city of Biloxi received its name from a Sioux word meaning "first people".

On the coast of Maine is the small town of Pirates Cove, which is similar to the old New England seaports depicted in paintings hanging in country inns or seafood restaurants.

Its tremendous output of dairy products has earned the state of Wisconsin the title of America's Dairyland.

Despite the growth of manufacturing and other industries, the economy of the state of Texas has remained heavily dependent on oil and gas.

2) ~ 보통 명사 of a N

an angel of a girl : [This girl is an angel.] : 천사 같은 여자 = an angelic girl

an angel of *the girl

this jewel of an island = this jewel-like island

앞에는 부정관사 외에도 'this / that / the / 소유격'이 올 수도 있다.

Spend a glorious day on this jewel of an island and be home for dinner.

Spend a glorious day on this jewel-like island and be home for dinner.

The fool of a conductor forgot to put me down at the end of the road. (=the foolish conductor)

At 35, this wisp of a woman has 13 children, from 20 years down to 10 months.

This wisp of a kid has a transplanted liver that could fail at any time.

a little mothy wisp of a man : 나방처럼 가냘픈 사람

this crescent-shaped jewel of a South Sea Island :

In addition to his parents, Mario was preceded in death by his angel of a wife, Elena "Helen" (Sildra) Grippa in 2011.

He was an angel of a child.

My first pregnancy was also a very easy one, even the delivery wasn't hard at all and what I was blessed with is an angel of a child.

She was an angel of a wife.

The war made him leave an angel of a wife for good.

She will always be remembered as an angel of a wife and mother.

He is a beast of a husband.

I am so sorry you are having to fight this battle with such a beast of a husband.

He is a brute of a husband.

She ran away from a brute of a husband who was in the habit of beating her.

How can such an angel of a wife live with such a brute of a husband!

I walked up to the door and a big, handsome brute of a man answered. Yum. I smiled at him and he kind of backed away.

The boat was smashed by a mountain of a wave and thrown high in the air.

Is that idiot of a salesman calling again? (=that idiotic salesman)

If I have to put up with that idiot of a boss much longer, I’ll be sending him on a one way trip to somewhere so far off the beaten track, he’ll have to have tweezers and a witch-doctor to find his way back!

It was hard to get some information from an oyster of a man.

There were a devil of a wife and a saint of a husband in the house.

I got married and we bought a castle of a house

If you live in a suburbs somewhere in the US, have money, private guards and a palace of a house and so on - then you don't have any worries.

First, Charleston is an absolute jewel of a town.

This happened long ago when I was only a slip of a girl, living on the edge of the Sperrins.

His target was merely a slip of a boy, maybe in his middle teen years at the most.

I saw Mike Pelfry throwing a whale of a ball game.

I think we are going to have a doozy of a recession.

Rumsfeld's claim turned out to be a whopper of a lie, according to my friend Ray McGovern, a former CIA analyst.

You're being fed a whopper, and I mean a whopper of a lie.

Howard Dean was a joke of a candidate.

To me, this is sort of a joke of a motorbike.

Well, you did have Jimmy Carter (what a joke of a President) and Bill Clinton.

★ a / one hell of a N

It must be a hell of a job trying to organize all this information.

We had a hell of a time finding a parking lot.

Everyone thinks you're one hell of a guy.

It was a helluva party. (helluva = hell of a)

In American English helluva is now an adjective, solely pre-modifying, meaning 'splendid, excellent,' or the like. It clearly (so it seems to me) results from an ellipsis of hell of a fine/great/nice/good.

Our young men played a heck of a football game. (heck = hell)

3) something of a N

He is something in the department.

He thinks that he is something.

I have many friends.

I have some doubt about this.

I don't have much doubt about it.

I have *a lot friends.

I have a lot of friends.

I have *a lot doubt.

I have a lot of doubt about it.

*Something doubt crossed my mind.

Something of doubt crossed my mind.

[be something of a]

ⓐ used for emphasizing that someone is fairly good at something or has a fairly good knowledge of something : 상당한

My grandmother was *a something poet.

My grandmother was something of a poet.

He is something of a musician.

Einstein was something of a violinist.

She is something of a celebrity.

ⓑ used for showing that you are not being very definite in the way you are describing someone or sth : 다소, 조금

Wood's performance in the tournament was something of a disappointment.

Joanna and I decided we wanted to see something of France before we have to go home.

As much as I love Shakespeare films, however, this was something of a disappointment.

[be somewhat of a]

He lost somewhat of his power. (=something)

I believe in Christ because I know something of His power in my life and have seen it in the lives of others.

He related to me somewhat of his life in the United States.

To understand Søren Kierkegaard it is helpful to know something of his life.

He is *a somewhat liar.

He is somewhat of a liar.

I'm somewhat of a goofy person.

Their reaction came as somewhat of a surprise to me, since their performances had been so flawless and because none of them had seemed stressed throughout the days we spent together.

The movie starts as somewhat of a typical coming-of-age teen comedy, but it gets much better later.

She is very beautiful.

How beautiful she is!

She is a very beautiful girl.

What a beautiful girl she is!

*A how beautiful girl she is!

'A'와 'girl' 사이에 'how beautiful'이 쓰일 수 없다.

How beautiful a girl she is!

How beautiful of a girl she is!

How large of a litter does a rat have at one time?

We didn't realize this was a very beautiful town.

We didn't realize *a how beautiful town this is.

We didn't realize how beautiful a town this was.

We didn't realize how beautiful of a town this was.

We finally got a chance to see just how beautiful of a lady she is as well.

Everybody should come to visit and realize how beautiful of a heaven this place is.

Everyone was absolutely amazed at how beautiful of a ceremony it was.

A : Sue is an excellent painter. I love her work.

B : Well, she's not *an as great painter as she used to be.

'painter' 앞에 'as great'를 쓸 수 없다.

B : Well, she's not as great a painter as she used to be.

A : Tom tells me that you really enjoy taking pictures.

B : I do, but I'm not nearly as skilled of *photographer as you are.

B : I do, but I'm not nearly as skilled of a photographer as you are.

B : I do, but I'm not nearly as skilled a photographer as you are.

Relax, it's not that big a deal if we're five minutes late.

'*a that big deal'을 쓸 수 없어서 'that big'을 앞으로 끄집어 낸 것이다.

A : How could you have told her?

B : Ross, I didn't think it would be that big of a deal. <=such a big deal>

A : Oh, she didn't think it would be that big of a deal.

The money isn't that big of a deal.

"Is his comment really that big of a deal?

This museum isn't that far of a drive from where I live.

It wasn't that far of a drive.

Getting a car you could rely on these days is not that hard of a task at all.

If you start smoking at a young age will you be able to stop? The younger you start, the harder it is to stop.

But I think learning a foreign language at too young an age is likely to affect the development of children's normal way of thought.

'at a *too young age'로 쓸 수는 없다. 'too young'을 앞으로 보내서 'at too young an age'로 쓰면 된다.

Can participating in competitive sports at too young of an age have a negative effect on our children and their future?

The Hollywood television and film industry is a terribly competitive world, and no one[child] should be exposed to it all at too young of an age.

5) much of a N / more of a N / less of a N / a great deal of a N

I'm not a *much detective, am I?

I'm not *much a detective, am I?

I'm not much of a detective, am I?

He is not much of a scholar.

It's not much of a problem for me.

He'd never act on his own - he's too much of a coward for that.

It was considered too much of a safety risk to transport nuclear fuel by train.

You can have too much of a good thing.

= Excess may do you harm.

Yaro Starak’s program has been much of a success because it targeted the right people through the right channels.

Why wasn't instant tea as much of a success as instant coffee?

'much of a success'가 쓰인 후에 동등 비교인 'as [much of a success] as'가 붙은 경우로 볼 수 있다.

I think it was just as much a success as the first one.

It's not as much a success as we hoped for, but it's not a failure.

본시 'a success'가 쓰인 후에 동등 비교인 'not as(=so) much [a success] as'가 붙은 경우로 볼 수는 있는데 'of'가 쓰인 것이 훨씬 더 많이 쓰인다.

It was as much of a success as I had imagined it would be.

Even so, the boycott was more of a success than a failure.

'much of a success'가 비교급이 되면서 'more of a success'로 바뀐 것이다.

I joke because this is more a success than a problem.

등위적 비교로 'more A than B'의 구조로 생겨난 것이다.

He is more of a poet than a novelist.

It was really more of a comment than a question.

He is less of a fool than he looks.

'more of a fool'의 열등 비교형이다.

It was less of a success than I had imagined.

Jet travel has made moving from place to place less of a problem.

He is not a great deal of a scholar.

'a great deal'이 'much'처럼 앞으로 나오면서 'of'가 쓰인 경우다.

I have never yet seen an adequate translation of any of his short lyrics, and even his prose demands a great deal of a translator.

6) 빈도 표시의 ~ of

I don't see much of you these days.

A : You agree then... you will let me see something of you?"

B : Of me?

A : Yes, of you... and of your daughter.

B : You make a strange request.

I've seen very little of her lately.

I hope to see more of you.

I hope we'll see more of you when you've finished your dissertation.

Have you seen a good deal of him lately? <
