# Trollope, however, is always one to see both sides to a question, which may be the reason that (A)[             ] and (B)[              ] are among his most skillfully depicted characters and that his scenes in their chambers and in court are so intensely interesting. Archdeacon Grantly is a splendid example of the church militant. He is a big, strapping, handsome, self-assured man who has no apologies to make, either for his own wealth or for the powers of his order, and who sees only mischief and hypocrisy in the grumblings of the underprivileged and the aspiration of those who seek change. It is possible for the reader to like the archdeacon even if he or she uneasily suspects that the archdeacon's creator likes him too much.
