정답 - A : I like y a girl; x a girl is honest and decent

y ≑ x면 y는 'such'로 전환하고 x는 'as'로 전환하면서 반복되는 'a girl'은 삭제한다.

[해석] 정직하고 예의 바른 그런 여자가 좋다.

[핵심 문법] such as

'such'는 '그와 비슷한', '~와 같은', '그런, 그러한'의 뜻으로 '부정관사 'a(n)'가 붙은 명사구'나 '복수 명사' 또는 '무관사 불가산 명사'와 함께 쓰인다.

He's not such a hard worker as his brother.  "그는 그의 형같이 열심히 일하는 그런 사람이 아니다."

Tigers eat meat; such animals are dangerous. "호랑이는 고기를 먹는다. 그런 동물들은 위험하다."

They were fed such sumptuous fare as kings dream of.  "그들은 왕이 꿈꾸는 그런 사치스런 음식을 대접받았다."

'such'가 'a 명사', '복수 명사', '불가산 명사'와 쓰인 예이다.

Those animals that eat meat are dangerous. "고기를 먹는 동물들은 위험하다."

Such animals as eat meat are dangerous. "고기를 먹는 그런 동물들은 위험하다."

Such animals *that eat meat are dangerous.

선행사에 다른 한정사(여기서 'Those')가 쓰일 때는 일반적인 관계사를 쓰면 되지만 'such'가 붙어 있을 때는 관계사는 'as'를 써야 하는데 이를 '상관적 관계사 as'라고 한다.

Such men as heard him praised him. "그의 이야기를 들은 사람들은 그를 칭찬했다."

Avoid such friends as will do you harm. "너에게 해를 끼치는 그런 친구들은 피해라."

Such inns as there were were generally dirty. "옛날에 있었던 그런 여관들은 일반적으로 더러웠다."

지금까지의 예문들에서 'as'는 주격 관계사로 쓰이고 있다.

위의 예문들에서 'as'는 목적격 관계사로 쓰이고 있다.

여기서 'as'는 전치사의 목적어로 쓰이고 있다.

A plan such as he proposes is unrealistic.  "그가 제안하는 그런 계획은 비현실적이다."

이처럼 'such'가 명사 뒤에 붙은 경우도 있다.

I haven't many specimens but I will send you such as I have.

"나는 많은 견본들은 없지만 내가 가진 것들은 네게 빌려주께."

'such'가 단독으로 쓰인 경우인데 반복되는 'specimens'를 쓸 이유가 없다.

'such' 뒤에 'that not'의 뜻으로 상관 접속사 'but'가 쓰이기도 한다.

You may use my car, such as it is. "좋은 차는 아닙니다만 제 차를 사용하십시오."

You're welcome to borrow the lawn-mower, such as it is, any time you want it.

"잔디 깎는 기계 빌리는 거 환영입니다. 변변치 않지만, 원하는 어느 때든지요."

'such as it is' 또는 'such as they are'에서 'such'는 '변변치 않은 것', '그저 그런 것'의 뜻이고 'as'는 양보 접속사로 'though'의 뜻이어서 '대단한 것은 못되지만', '변변치 못하지만' 정도로 해석한다.

industrialize : if a country industrializes, or someone industrializes it, it develops industries or makes them more modern
