(비격식) 꾸짖다, ~에게 잔소리하다, 야단치다, 그만두라고 하다; 집어쳐; [남에게] [할 일을] 할당하다

: to reprimand, scold; excoriate, criticize angrily; tell someone where to get off

간접 목적어 뒤에 'off'는 홀로 나오지만 직접 목적어나 마찬가지로 사용된다. 'off'는 '이제 그만'의 뜻으로 사용되고 있다.

The teacher told me off for swearing. "선생님은 욕은 그만하라고 나를 꾸짖었다."

My parents told me off for coming home late.

"부모님들을 늦게 귀가하는 거 그만하라고 나를 꾸짖었다."

It's about time someone told Jim off for his lewd behavior in the office.

"누군가 짐에게 사무실에서의 외설스러운 행동 그만두라고 해야 할 때다."

The waiter told off the rude customer for acting so inappropriately toward her.

"웨이터는 그 무례한 손님에게 그녀에게 아주 부적절하게 행동했다고 고마하라고 꾸짖었다."

'the rude customer'의 원래 위치는 'told'의 뒤이다.

Rob told off his boss, then quit. "롭은 사장에게 '고마하셔'라고 하고서 그만두었다."

'his boss'의 원래 위치는 'off' 앞이다.

I'm going to get told off for being late. "난 늦는 거 그만하라고 말 듣게 될 거야."

유사 수동태로 'get told off'로 사용되기도 한다.

Shelley was one of those kids who was always getting told off at school.

"셜리는 학교에서 허구한 날 그만두라고 말 듣는 애들 중의 하나였다."

[get off (one's) high horse]

"높은 말 타지 마라.", "높은 말에서 내려라."

다 '건방 떨지 마.'의 뜻이다. '꼴 값 그만 떨어라.'와도 비슷한 말이다.['one's high horse'를 형용사와 명사의 연어로 외우고 있어야 한다.]

Sam is never going to make friends until he gets off his high horse and stops acting like he knows more than all of us. "샘은 결코 친구를 사귀지 못할 것이다. 건방 그만 떨고 우리 모두보다 더 안다는 식으로 행동하는 것을 그만두지 않는 한."

'get off one's high horse'에서 'one's high horse'가 생략된 것으로 이해할 수 있다.

I'd just go right up to them and tell them where to get off.

"나라면 바로 그들에게 가서 고마 폼 잡고 내려오라고 말하겠다."

When he called back a third time, I told him [where to get] off.

"그가 세 번째로 전화했을 때 나는 고마 꺼지라고 말했다."

He told me where to get off, so I walked out on him.
