정답 - D : 상관시키기 위해서는 앞쪽에도 'as'를 두 번 써서 'as ~ as'와 'better ~ than'으로 써야 한다. 시설들과 비교하는 것이므로 반복되는 새 호텔의 시설들도 복수형인 'those'를 써야 한다.

[해석] 더 오래된 호텔의 시설은 새 호텔의 시설과 비교했을 때 동등하거나 더 좋다.

 

[핵심 문법] 비교의 병치

*John is a more [[expert pianist] and [accomplished singer]] than Mary.

John is a [[more expert pianist] and [more accomplished singer]] than Mary. 

"존은 메리보다 더 전문적인 피아니스트이며 더 성공적인 가수이다."

'more'는 두 개의 비교 단위를 공통으로 할 수 없다. 반드시 두 번 사용해야 한다.

John is as anxious to finish the job as George is, but *not as Mary is.

John is as anxious to finish the job as George is, but not so anxious to do it as Mary is.

"존은 조지만큼 일을 끝내기를 열망하지만 메리만큼 열망하지는 않는다."

'not'을 쓴 경우에도 새로운 비교 종속절(as Mary is)이 오면 비교의 주절에 다시 'so ~'를 반복해서 써야 한다.

He is as rich as or even richer than his uncle.

'He is as rich as his uncle' + 'He is even richer than his uncle'에서 'his uncle'을 공통 관계로 만든 것인데 원칙적으로는 '두 번째 as'를 써야 한다.

This is as good (as) or even better than that.

이처럼 '두 번째 as'를 쓰지 않는 경우도 보이지만 역시 원칙은 'as'를 써주어야 한다.

Your son, who's a year older than Christy and twice as big and twice as strong, just hit your daughter in the stomach with all his might and disobeyed me, and you don't want to do anything about it?

앞에 'than Christy'가 있어서 뒤에는 종속절 전체인 'as Christy'가 생략되어 있다.

He is as rich as his uncle, if not richer. "그는 그의 삼촌보다 더는 아니어도 그만큼 부자다."

'if not ~'은 문중에 올 때는 아직 비교의 대상이 나오지 않았으므로 'than'을 써야 하고 위에서 뒤의 'his uncle'은 공통 관계로 쓰이고 있는데 어색하고 비경제적이므로 피하는 것이 좋다. 반면에 'if not ~'이 문미에 올 때는 비교의 대상이 이미 나와 있으므로 'than his uncle'은 생략한다.

She felt that she swam as well as he did, if not better. 

"그녀는 자신이 더 잘 할지는 몰라도 그만큼 잘 수영한다고 생각했다."

She felt that she was as good a swimmer as he was, *if not better.

명사의 비교면 'as good a swimmer as'의 순서로 사용하는 것은 당연하다. 그러나 'if not better'가 따르면 곤란하다.

She felt that she was as good a swimmer as he was, if not a better one. 

"그녀는 자신이 그만큼 훌륭한 수영 선수라고 생각했다. 더 잘하는 선수는 아닐지는 몰라도."

'was'의 보어로 명사인 'as good a swimmer'가 사용된 만큼 'if' 뒤에도 'she was'가 생략되어 있으므로 'if (she was) not a better one'을 사용해야 한다. 물론 여기서 'one'은 N을 대신하는 대형태이다. (여기서는 'NP'를 대신하는 대형태가 아니다.)

정답 - B : [than] → [to] : 라틴 비교인 'superior' 다음에는 'to'가 따라야 한다.

[해석] 과학 (교육) 기관들이 있다는 것은 과학자들이 개발해낸 이론들과 아이디어들이 현대 과학이 발전하기 이전에 우리 인간들이 가졌던 것들보다 훨씬 더 뛰어나다는 것을 의미한다.

[핵심 문법] 라틴 비교

'~or'로 끝나는 라틴어 출신 단어들인 'senior'(연상, 고참, 상사), 'junior'(연하, 후배, 하급), 'superior'(우월한, 상급의, ~에 좌우되지 않는), 'inferior'(열등한, 하층의) 등은 'than'을 쓰지 않고 'to'를 사용한다.

He is two years senior to / *than me. "그는 나보다 2살 많다."

= He is two years older *to / than me.

= He is older than me by two years.

= He is senior to me by two years.

= He is my two years senior.

Tom is taller than Bob by two inches. "톰은 밥보다 2인치 더 크다."

cf. You are wide of the mark by a large margin--I have been in this planet for more than 50 years and well acquainted with human nature.

"당신은 많이 빗나갔다. 나는 이 행성에 50년 이상을 살아왔고 인간의 본성에 대해 잘 알고 있다."

차이를 나타낼 때 전치사는 'by'를 사용한다.

His position is inferior to mine. "그의 지위는 내 지위보다 낮다."

This is superior in several points to that. "이게 저거보다 몇 가지 점에서 우월하다."

= This is several advantages over that.

I'm superior to that fear. "그러한 무서움쯤은 아무것도 아니다."
