  그리고 캐더린은 자신이 대단한 능력의 샘을 고용할 수 있었던 것을 매일 고마워했다. 루크를 가르치면서 보호할 수 있는 전직 CIA 요원은 발견하기 참 드문 존재였다. "생각해보니." 그녀는 계단 꼭대기에 도착하면서 그에게 미소 지었다. "어쩌면 약간의 오만의 흔적이 있을 수도?"

[어휘 또는 표현]

on one's hands : 돌보게 되어; ~의 책임으로서; 주체하지 못하는

rebellion [ribéljən] : 반역, 반란, 폭동; (일반적으로) 반항

taste like feet : 양말 오래 신고, 신발 오래 신어서 냄새나는 발 같은 맛이라는 뜻이다. (하, 족발은 맛있는데 ...)

[해설]

1. ★★ (with) each with (/ having)  ~ : 'with 구문'의 'with'는 'each' 앞에서 흔히 생략되며 뒤에도 'having'을 못쓰는 것은 아니지만 거의 'with'를 사용한다.

What's not to like with me as a tutor? "제가 선생인데 싫을 게 뭐가 있어요?"

'with me as a tutor'는 'with 구문'에 해당된다.

especially American English used to say that something has no bad qualities or features

Literally, there's nothing not to like or love here!  "글자 그대로 여기서 좋아하지 않을 건 없다."

What [about this topic] would someone dislike? "이 주제 뭐가 싫은데?"

It's a big house with a swimming pool. What's not to like? "수영장까지 있는 큰 집이다. 싫을 게 뭐 있어?"

He's tall, he's sweet, has a great sense of humor, and he has a great job - what's not like?

"키 크지, 상냥하지, 유머감각 대단하지, 직업 좋지 - 싫은 게 뭔데?"

They serve great coffee and the cakes are divine. What's not to like? (divine : 훌륭한, 멋진)

"대단한 커피 주지 케이크 훌륭하지. 싫은 게 뭐가 있겠어?"

'What's not to like?'에서 'What'은 '행위 주어'가 아니고 '대상 주어'이다. 'not to like'의 의미상의 주어는 흔히 상대방(you)이며 'like' 목적어는 'What'과 같아서 안 쓰는 것이다. 직역하면 '무엇이 (네가) 안 좋아하는 것이지?' 정도가 된다.

★ 'be to blame for'나 'to die for'와도 유사한 유형입니다.

Who's really to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet?  

"로미오와 줄리엣의 죽음에 대해 누가 책임을 져야 하지요."

(우린 누굴 책임의 대상으로 비난을 해야죠?)

Sun, sand, warm breezes, rum drinks with umbrellas in them, what's not to like?

"태양, 모래사장, 따뜻한 바람, 우산 꽂은 럼주, 싫은 게 뭐가 있겠어?"

Traffic, noise, smells, people pushing and shoving, pickpockets, what's not to like?

"교통 혼잡, 소음, 냄새, 서로 밀치는 사람들, 소매치기 꾼들, 싫은 게 뭐 있을 라구?"

때론 너무 흔한 표현이다 보니 이처럼 비꼬는 투로 사용하기도 한다.
