1) 능동형

if you hole up or are holed up somewhere, you stay there, especially because you are hiding.

We just holed up at home with some good movies while it snowed all weekend.

"우린 그냥 멋진 영화 몇 편을 갖고 집에 처박혀 있었고 주말 내내 눈이 내렸다."

'stand up'이면 '완전히 서다'의 뜻이지만 'hole up'이면 '전체를 구멍에 넣다'의 뜻이 됩니다.

We'd better find some shelter and hole up until the storm passes.

"폭풍이 지나갈 때까지 우린 쉴 곳을 찾아 잠수타는 게 좋을 것 같다."

While writing his book, he holed up for a year at a cabin in the woods.

2) 수동형

She was holed up in the mountains somewhere, trying to avoid the media.

'place oneself in ~'는 능동으로 '스스로를 ~에 위치시키다'의 뜻인데 'be placed in ~'의 수동태면 '~에 위치되게 하다'로 우리말로는 '처박혀 있게 하다'의 뜻과 비슷하다. 'hole up'의 경우에는 능동의 재귀 대명사를 사용하는 것은 드물고 수동으로 'be holed up'으로 '처박혀 있게 하다'의 뜻으로 주로 사용합니다.

By noon he was holed up way to the south, looking back at the recycling plant from the rear.
