  "But--never a fully blown expositions, never a complete soup-to-nuts discussion of the whole question . . ."

  It wasn't what Raymond was saying, but the bizarrely intense manner in which he was saying it, that caused Pracht--a normally placid individual--to lose his temper.

  "You know, Ray," he said, fast reaching the boiling point, "I've done my best to try to like you--and it hasn't been easy. Because, frankly, I find you untrusting, unpleasant, and uptight."

  Good, Ray thought, we're going to get (A)[  ] the nitty-gritty. "You're entitled to your exalted opinion," he commented, for the first time ever addressing the scientist in an arrogant tone. "And while we exchange home truths, I've never been very fond of you either. Even less so of that hoodlum you call a son."

  "You leave Jerry out of this," Pracht snapped angrily. And then a thought struck him. "Or is he what this is all about?"

 

#2.   "He's just ruthless ambitious," Isabel commented, without revealing her personal relationship with him.

   "No, he's more than that, he's incredibly astute," Pracht replied. "You'd be amazed, but one or two of the boys actually felt their egos being stroked and dropped a little note to Stockholm. I don't have to tell you that when it gets (B)[    ] to the nitty-gritty, every letter helps.

   "But of course, this year it's a foregone conclusion in physics," he stated, smiling at his future daughter-in-law. "I hope your Swedish is good enough to give an acceptance speech."

    '좋지요, 우리 핵심으로 가보지요.'라고 레이는 생각했다. "교수님은 그리 고상한 견해를 가지실 자격이 있으시죠."라고 그는 말했다. 처음으로 교만한 어투로 과학자에게 말을 했다. "그리고 우리가 서로에게 가슴 찌르는 말을 하는 김에 하는 말인데 저도 당신을 좋아한 적이 없어요. 아들이라고 하는 그 건달 녀석은 더욱더 좋아한 적이 없지요."

    "제리는 얘기에서 뺍시다."라고 프라트 교수는 분노해서 일갈했다. 그리고는 갑자기 한 생각이 들었다. "아니면 이게 다 게 때문인 거요?"

    "하지만 물론 올해는 물리학 부문은 뻔한 결론이 난 거지."라고 프라트 교수는 말하면서 미래의 며느리감인 이사벨을 보며 웃었다. "자네가 수락 연설을 할 정도로 충분히 스웨덴 어를 알기를 희망하네."

I couldn't resist stroking my ego a bit by reading some of the good reviews for my latest film.

[해설]

nitty-gritty [nítigríti] : 사물의 핵심, 요긴한 일, 요체; 가장 긴요한, 본질적인 : fundamental, detailed, or proving : the essential substance or details of a matter; basics; crux [라임은 맞춰 사용된 것인데 어원은 불명이다. 노예 매매선에서 노예들이 가버리고 남은 것이 무엇이든 그걸 지칭하는 데서 유래되었다는 설도 있다.]

[get (down) to the nitty-gritty]

Let's skip the chitchat and get down to the nitty-gritty. "잡담은 그만하고 핵심으로 갑시다."

Let's get down to the nitty-gritty--how much will it cost? "핵심으로 가서 얼마요?" [요즘 말로 하면 'cut to the chase']

Good, Ray thought, we're going to get (A)[to] the nitty-gritty. "좋지요, 우리 핵심으로 가보지요."

I don't have to tell you that when it gets (B)[down] to the nitty-gritty, every letter helps.
