정답 - D : [would fear] → [fear] : 가정법 문장에 이어지는 가정법 문장의 경우가 아니기 때문에 가정법이 쓰일 이유가 없다. 'we fear ~'는 만약 중국과의 무역 전쟁이 일어나면 '~ 이하'가 두렵다는 뜻이 아니므로 가정법을 쓸 이유가 없다. "중국이 전략을 바꾸지 않는다면 어느 나라도 행동을 자제하고 싶은 마음이 들지 않을까 걱정이다."

cf. If we could extend our lifespan indefinitely, we would fear death.

반면에 'A trade war with China would be ~'에는 가정법 과거의 조건이 숨어 있다. 'If a trade war with China broke out, it would be ~'와 같은 뜻이다.

A : a stack of ~ : 다수의, 다량의, 많은

B : 'a reference to China's manipulation'은 "market-oriented exchanged rates"에 대한 동격부에 해당된다.

C : be bound to ~ : 꼭 ~하게 되는

{be [disastrous] and [bound to escalate around the world]}의 구조로 병치되어 있다.

[해석] 인도는 중국에 대해서 많은 무역 소송들을 제시한 바 있다. 아시아 태평양 경제협력포럼은 최근 아시아의 통화에 대해 "시장 지향의 환율"을 택할 것을 요구했는데 이는 중국의 환율조작을 언급한 것이다. 만약 중국과의 무역 전쟁이 있게 된다면 그것은 큰 재앙이 될 것이며 전 세계로 확대될 것이다. 자제가 요구된다. 하지만 중국이 전략을 수정하지 않으면 어느 국가도 자제하고픈 마음이 들지 않을 것이라는 점이 우리는 걱정된다.

 

[핵심 문법] 숨어 있는 가정법 조건

① 명사(구)

No one in the world would think her to be beautiful.

= If one saw her, no one would think her to be beautiful.

A true friend would act otherwise.

= If he were a true friend, he would act otherwise.

② 부사(구)

One step farther, they would have fallen into the river.

= If they had taken one step farther, they would have fallen into the river.

In my shoes, you would not have done that.

= If you had been in my shoes, you would not have done that.

I could have done it half the time.

= If I had had half the time, I could have done it.

③ 부정사

To hear him speak English, you would take him for an American.

= If you heard him speak English, you would take him for an American.

It would have been better for you to leave it unsaid.

= It would have been better if you had left it unsaid.

To wait / *Waiting would have been a mistake.

과거 시간에서 동명사는 보통 사건이 발생한 것을 의미하므로 발생하지 않은 사건은 부정사를 쓴다.

④ 분사

The same thing, happening in war time, would amount to great disaster.

= If it should happen in war time, the same thing would amount to great disaster.

Born in better times, he would have succeeded.

= If he had been born in better times, he would have succeeded.

⑤ 관계절

Any boy who should do that would be laughed at.

= If he should do that, any boy would be laughed at.

If he should do that, the boy would be laughed at.

*The boy who should do that would be laughed at.

정관사 있는 경우를 관계절로 조건절을 대신할 수 없다.

He gave up everything, when he might have succeeded.

'when'(~ 인데도)은 'though'와 비슷하게 사용된 것이며 조건절인 'if he had tried'가 숨어 있다.

⑥ 가정법에 이어지는 가정법 문장

Without special study we cannot read the English of the twelfth century, and if one of the people of that time should come to life, we could not understand his speech. He would be a foreigner from a strange land, though his blood might be in our veins.

앞 문장이 가정법 과거이기 때문에 'He would ~'의 가정법 문장이 조건 없이 이어지고 있다.
