명령문, 당위문 기타와 'or'나 'and' ★★

#1.  When General Freeland's men descended on the Lower Falls, the first thing the neighbors did was run to St. Peter's Cathedral, the local Catholic church just a few blocks away. The defining feature of the Lower Falls, like so many of the other Catholic neighborhoods of West Belfast, was its religiosity. St. Peter's was the heart of the neighborhood. Four hundred people would attend mass at St. Peter's on a typical weekday. The most important man in the community was the local priest. He came running. He went up to the soldiers. The raid must be done quickly, he warned them, (A)[    ] there would be trouble.

 

#2.  "So tell me what happened. You've been driving for four days straight, you're tired, you're scared, the heat is getting to you. Maybe Sean and Louise are bickering in the backseat, you know the way children do. Maybe they keep asking for things they can't have, even though you told them no a hundred times already. Maybe they're shouting and screaming, over and over and over, louder and louder, and they just won't stop. Did you do something, Audra? Did you pull over someplace out in the desert and go back there to them? Maybe you only meant to chew them out. Maybe a little smack on the leg or the arm. Maybe a shake, that's all. I know that's all you meant to do, I've wanted to do it to my own kids plenty of times, but you just lost control for a moment. Just for a split second, that's all, and you did something. Is that what happened, Audra? I know it's eating you. All you have to do is tell me, (B)[   ] we can go get them and this will all be over. Just tell me, Audra what did you do?"

 

#3.  "Do that," Joe started the car, turned, and went back down the road.

[#1. 해석]  프리랜드 장군의 군인들이 로워 폴스를 급습했을 때 주민들이 제일 먼저 한 것은 성 베드로 성당으로 달려간 것이었다. 겨우 몇 블록 떨어진 동네 가톨릭 성당이었다. 로워 폴스의 특징은 웨스트 벨파스트의 다른 많은 가톨릭 지역들과 마찬가지로 신앙심이 깊다는 것이었다. 성 베드로 성당은 마을의 중심이었다. 400 명의 신도들이 전형적인 평일날 성 베드로 성당의 미사에 참석했다. 마을의 가장 중요한 인사는 그곳 신부님이었다. 그는 달려왔다. 군인들을 마주하고 경고했다. 단속은 빠르게 끝내야 한다고 안 그러면 문제가 심각해질 거라고.

[어휘 또는 표현]

유사 강조문의 원형 run to = (to) run to

[명령문 또는 당위문과 'and'와 'or']

1. 명령문 + and

(1) 명령문 뒤에 'and'를 쓰면 '그러면'의 뜻으로 쓰인다.

Hurry up, and you will be in time. "서둘러라 그러면 시간에 댈 수 있을 것이다."

= If you hurry up, you will be in time.

Sit next to Joan and she'll explain what you have to do.

"조안 옆에 앉아라. 그러면 게가 네가 뭘 해야 하는지 설명해줄 거다."

Turn to the left, and you will see the post office. "왼쪽으로 돌아라. 그러면 우체국이 보일 것이다."

Finish your homework and I'll give you some ice cream. "숙제를 끝내라. 그러면 아이스크림 좀 줄게."

Stir, and you are a dead man. "움직여봐라 그러면 죽는다."

"You do that once more," his father said, looking up from his paper, "and I'll give you a jolly good hiding. "한 번 더 그래 봐라."라고 신문에서 눈을 떼고 올려다보면서 그의 아버지는 말했다. "그러면 졸라 패버릴 거야." 

(good : complete, thorough)

(2) 생략된 형태로 명사나 부사구만 올 때도 있다.

One more such loss, and you will be ruined. "또 한 번 그런 손해를 보면 너는 파산할 것이다."

= If you suffer one more such loss, you will be ruined.

Four minutes twenty and I call Brzezinski. "4 분 20 초 후면 브레진스키 교수 부른다."

[본문]

One more night (C)[and] she should be finished with the reconstruction.

= If she spends one more night, she should be finished with the reconstruction.

(3) '명령문 + and + 명령문'으로 명령문이 등위 될 때도 있는데 혼동하지 않아야 한다.

Hold the machine as steadily as you can, and occasionally put some oil on the drill. 

"단단히 잡고 가끔 드릴에 기름 좀 쳐라."

Come here, and take supper. "와서 저녁을 먹어라."

Come and play a game of bridge with us. "와서 우리와 함께 브리지 게임하자."

Come and see me. (= Come to see me.) "나를 만나러 오시오."  

여기서 'and'는 'to'를 대신하여 쓰였다.

Go fetch / Go and fetch some water. (Go fetch : 주로 미국식) "가서 물 좀 가져와라."

Go and be miserable!  (영국식) "실컷 고생 좀 해 봐라."

Boy, am I beat. Hey, you wanna go get some lunch? 

"아이고 졸라 지치네. 헤이, 자네 가서 점심거리 좀 사 올래?"

Eat too much candy and you get a stomach ache. "지나치게 캔디 많이 먹어 봐라. 그러면 배가 아플 거야."

Even mention Cuba and Harry has a fit. "쿠바를 언급만 해도 해리는 불같이 노할 거야."

(have / throw a fit : 발작을 일으키다, 까무러치다, 불같이 노하다)

Buy myself a new suit and my wife raises the roof. "내 양복을 사면 아내가 고래고래 야단칠 거야."

(raise the roof : 고래고래 야단치다, 큰 소동을 일으키다)

이 예문들은 조건절을 대신해서 명령문을 사용하면서도 'and' 뒤에는 앞으로의 단일 사건이 아닌 일반적인 사실에 해당되는 정보가 나타난 경우이다.

(4) 간혹 속담 같은 경우에는 '명령문 + and + 명령문'으로 '조건과 귀결'의 의미를 표현한다.

Spare the rod and spoil the child. "매를 아끼면 아이를 버려 놓는다."

= If you spare the rod, you will spoil the child.

2. 명령문 + or

(1) 명령문 뒤에 'or'를 쓰면 '그렇지 않으면'의 뜻이 된다.        

Put your coat on, or you will catch cold. "코트를 걸쳐라. 그렇지 않으면 감기에 걸릴 거다."

= If you don't put your coat on, you'll catch cold.

= Unless you put your coat on, you'll catch cold.

 Open the door or I'll call the police. "문 여세요. 안 그러면 경찰 부릅니다."

= If you don't open the door, I'll call the police.

'or'뒤에 'else'를 붙여도 된다.

Make haste, or (else) you will be late. "서둘러라. 그렇지 않으면 늦을 거다."

Do as I tell you, or else you'll be fired. "말한 대로 해라. 그렇지 않으면 해고다."

'or'만으로도 '그렇지 않으면'의 뜻이 함축되는데 '그렇지 않으면'이란 뜻인 'else'를 또 쓰면 강조적인 표현이 된다.

Do what I say, or else. "내가 하라는 대로 해라. 안 그러면 (알지)."

Listen. I don't care if you've got a meeting with the President of the United States. You show up between four and five today ― or else.

"잘 들어. 네가 미국 대통령을 만날 예정이래도 난 상관 안 해. 오늘 4 시와 5 시 사이에 와라. 안 그러면 알지."

A : John, your room looks like a pigsty! Clean it up this instant or else!

"존, 네 방은 돼지우리 같다. 바로 깨끗이 치워라. 안 그러면 알지!"

B : But mom, I just cleaned it this morning!  "하지만, 엄마, 바로 오늘 아침에 청소했거든요."

'or else' 뒤에 아무것도 오지 않는 경우도 있는데 흔히 위협적인 내용을 직접 말하지 않고 '알지'라는 식으로 표현하는 것과 같다.

간혹 'or (else)' 대신 'otherwise'가 쓰일 때도 있다.

Work harder, otherwise you will fail in the next exam.

"더 열심히 공부해라. 그렇지 않으면 다음 시험에서 떨어지게 될 거다."

Bring me four dozen eggs and two gallons of milk here in this room before noon, or Heaven have mercy on your bones! 

"계란 네 다스와 2 갤런의 우유를 여기 이 방으로 오전에 가져와라. 안 그러면 하늘에 자비를 기원해라."

'명령문 or' 다음에 기원문이 쓰인 형태이다.

(2) 생략된 형태로 'or'로 등위 된 것이 '귀결과 조건'으로 역으로 쓰일 때도 있다.

Trick or treat! "맛있는 것 줄래요 아니면 장난칠까요."

3. 당위문 + or 또는 and

​'must'로 대표되는 조동사 등이 사용된 문장을 '당위문'이라 칭한다.

(1) 명령문 대신 'must', 'have to', 'have got to', 'need to', 'had better' 등의 당위문이 사용되고서 'or'나 'otherwise'가 오기도 한다.

If you put the insect  in a matchbox, you must make holes in the lid to let some air in, or it will die.

"벌레를 성냥갑에 넣으면 공기가 들어갈 수 있도록 구멍을 뚫어주어야만 한다. 안 그러면 벌레는 죽게 된다."

You have to be able to sing first or it doesn't matter how good-looking you are.

"우선 노래를 할 수 있어야 돼. 안 그러면 생긴 건 아무 소용이 없어."

You've got to do it alone, otherwise it will never be done. "혼자 해야만 해. 안 그러면 안 되는 거야."

You need to save the e-mail as a plain text file, otherwise it will not work.

"이메일을 그냥 평범한 텍스트 파일로 저장할 필요가 있어. 안 그러면 작동이 안 될 거야."

You had better return it or I will call the police. "너, 그거 돌려주어야 할 거야. 안 그러면 경찰에 연락한다."

You'd better look sharp and find it, else you'll soon know what'll happen to you. (else : short for 'or else')

"너, 빨리 그거 찾아라. 안 그러면 곧 무슨 일이 네게 일어나는지 알게 될 거다." 

(look sharp : 빨리해, 정신 차려, 조심해)

[본문]

The raid must be done quickly, he warned them, (A)[or] there would be trouble.

(2) 뒤에 'and'가 사용되는 경우도 있다.

You have to tell me, and we can work it out.  "당신은 네게 말해야만 해. 그러면 우린 잘 해나갈 수 있어." 

If you got a problem with how I work, you gotta tell me and we can work out a solution.

​"내 일하는 방식에 혹 문제가 있었으면 내게 말해야만 해. 그래야 우린 해결책을 만들어 낼 수 있어."

(3) 2 인칭이 아닌 경우에도 이런 표현은 물론 가능하다.

 It's time we got going, or else we'll make perfect targets for muggers.

"우린 가야만 해. 안 그러면 우린 강도의 완벽한 표적이 될 거야."

We must work now to protect the future of the earth, or it may be late. 

​"우리는 지구의 미래를 보호하기 위해 지금 노력해야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 때가 늦을지도 모른다."

We have to pay the bill before next week or else the electricity supply will be stopped, and just now we haven't enough money to pay for our food. Get the picture? "우린 다음 주 이전에 고지서를 납부해야 돼. 안 그러면 전기 공급이 끈길 거야 그러고 지금 우린 식품을 살 충분한 돈도 없어. 상황이 이해돼요?"

We had to keep every instrument and bit of equipment just so or the old boy would blow his top. 

"우린 도구와 약간의 장비를 다 정돈해 둬야 했다. 안 그러면 노친네가 불같이 화낼 것이었다."

He was the man without mercy, the ruthless one, who must be obeyed or else.

"그는 자비가 없는 무자비한 사람이었다. 그의 말은 따라야만 했다. 안 그러면 뻔했다."

It was a hundred and fifty pounds I asked for. You sent only a hundred. The other fifty had better arrive tomorrow or else. "내가 요구했던 것은 백 150 파운드였다. 당신은 100 파운드만을 보냈다. 나머지 50 파운드도 내일 와야 한다. 안 그러면 알지." (unfinished threat or warning)

The work had better be finished before tomorrow, or I'll know the reason why!

"일은 내일은 끝내야만 하는 상황이었다. 안 그러면 내가 그 이유를 알게 될 거다!"

Essays are expected to be neatly typed and proofread, or they will not be accepted.

"에세이는 깨끗하게 타이프 해서 교정을 봐야 한다. 안 그러면 접수도 안 될 거다."

[유사 강조된 당위문 + 'and']

[본문]

All you have to do is (to) tell me, (B)[and] we can go get them and this will all be over.

= You have only to tell me, (B)[and] we can go get them and this will all be over.

'have only to'를 'all'을 이용하는 유사 강조 구문으로 전환한 것이다.

 

일종의 '당위문' 뒤에 'and'가 사용될 수 있다. 문맥상 'or'가 아니라 'and'가 사용되어야 한다.
