#1.  "No, I can handle it." She got to her feet slowly, removing the bag of ice from her left shoulder. Alex had left her (A) [     ] and early to teach his morning classes at the academy. Afterward, he planned on swinging by his parents' and picking up Jack. This was the longest they'd been away from their son, and they both missed him terribly.

  Forty-five minutes later she poked her head into Parcht's office.

  "Karl, can you spare me a few minutes?"

  "Be my guest."

  Without another word she hastened to the whiteboard, picked up a colored marker and began by setting out the first principles from which she developed the theory, explaining all her assumptions and showing where she had deviated down a new path.

   Finally she concluded. "Well, what do you think, Karl?"

   다른 말도 하지 않고 서둘러 화이트보드로 가서 칼라 마커를 집어 들고 이론을 끄집어낸 일차 원리들을 기술하며 자신의 모든 가정들을 설명하고 어디서부터 벗어나 새로운 길로 나가게 되었는지 보여주었다.

 

    마침내 결론을 내리게 된다. "칼 교수님, 저, 어떻게 생각하세요?"

2) 설명하다 : to lead someone through a complex problem or thought process

Mary walked Jane through the complex solution to the calculus problem. 

"메리는 제인에게 적분 문제의 복잡한 풀이를 설명해 주었다."

Do I have to walk you through this solution? "제가 푼 거를 설명해야 하나요?"

It gets even worse than that. Let me just walk you through this one. 

"거보다 더 심해지기도 합니다. 제가 그냥 이걸 설명할게요."

[bright and early]

1) 아침 일찍, 이른 아침에 : very early in the morning, at dawn

I had to wake up bright and early to make sure I was at the airport in time for 7 AM flight.

"난 아침 일찍 일어나야 했어. 오전 7 시 편 비행기에 맞춰 확실히 공항에 가야 했거든."

It's a long trip, so we'll have to start out bright and early.

"긴 여정이므로 우리는 이른 아침에 출발해야만 할 거다."

I was supposed to meet my sister bright and early at the gym, but I was so exhausted when my alarm went off that I just went back to sleep. "체육관에서 아침 일찍 내 동생을 만나기로 돼 있었지만 알람이 울렸을 때 너무 피곤해서 나는 그냥 다시 잠을 잤다."

2) 소프트 웨어 업계(night owls) 슬랭 : 한낮에

A : Where is Kenny? "케니는 어디 있어?"

B : He said he'd be here bright and early. "그러대, 환할 때 낮에 이리 온다고 했어."

A : Oh ... so ... around 1 then? "오... 그래서... 1 시쯤?"

B : Or later ...  "아니면 더 늦게..."

'good and 다양한 형용사/부사', 'nice and 다양한 형용사/부사',

'rare and 약간의 형용사/부사'에서 '형용사 + and'는 '매우, 아주'의 뜻으로 부사로 쓰인다.

'bright and early'는 '환한 것'이 '일찍'과 결합력이 커서 거의 이 표현으로만 쓰인다.
