A : 'deny'는 회상 동사로 동명사를 목적어로 취한다.

[해석] 그 사람은 경찰관을 죽이겠다고 위협한 혐의를 부인했다.

B : 동사 'mean(의도하다)'은 목적어가 따를 때 의미상의 주어를 표시하는 'for'의 사용은 선택적이다. 유사한 동사로 'ask, hate, intend, like, prefer, wish'가 있다.

[핵심 문법] 부정사의 '의미상의 주어 표시의 for'

I want him / *for him to go there.

'want, expect, desire, need' 등 대부분의 동사들은 목적어이자 부정사의 의미상의 주어 앞에 'for'를 사용하지 않아야 한다.

I asked John / for John to meet Mary. "나는 존에게 메리를 만나보라고 요청했다."

I meant him / for him to crash. “그를 망하게 할 작정이었다.”

'ask, hate, intend, like, prefer, wish, mean' 등의 몇몇 동사들의 경우 'for'의 사용은 선택적이다.

Theresa would like very much for you / *you to attend the recital.

"테레사는 네가 연주회에 오기를 아주 많이 바란다."

분리된 경우에는 꼭 'for'를 사용해야 한다.

[해석] 중국의 우리 파트너와의 대화를 확인하고서 월요일에 선적이 되도록 해두었다.

 

[핵심 문법] 자동사 뒤의 부정사 '의미상의 주어 표시의 for'

I waited *him / for him to speak.  "나는 그가 말하기를 기다렸다."

We have arranged *the bus / for the bus to pick us up here.  "우린 버스가 여기서 우릴 픽업하도록 해 두었어."

I longed *him / for him to say something. "나는 그가 뭔가를 말하기를 바랐다."

'wait, hope, long, arrange'는 이 경우엔 자동사여서 필히 'for'를 사용해야 한다.

I screamed *Mary / for Mary / to Mary to go. "나는 메리에게 가라고 소리쳤다."

I yelled *Bill / for Bill / to Bill to put the cat out. "나는 빌에게 고양이 내보내라고 고함쳤다."

'scream'과 'yell'의 경우 '전치사 to'를 써도 비슷한 뜻이 된다.

[핵심 문법] 부정사의 의미상의 주어 앞의 'on'과 'with'

You can't rely on him / *for him to assist you. "그가 너를 도울 거라고 기대할 수 없다.'

'rely, depend, count, bank'는 본시 'on'이 붙어서 쓰이므로 'for를' 사용하지 않는다.

You can't rely on the weather being for fine for anything you plan in England.

"영국에서 뭔가를 계획할 때 날씨가 좋을 거라고 기대할 수 없다."

★의미상의 주어가 의지를 가질 수 없을 때(날씨)는 동명사가 따른다.

I prevailed on her to accept the invitation. "나는 그녀를 설득해서 초청을 받아들이게 했다."

‘설득해서 ~하게 하다’의 뜻일 때 'prevail on'을 사용한다. 드물게 'with'를 사용하기도 한다.

The prisoner pleaded with the King to set him free. "죄수는 자신을 풀어달라고 왕에게 간청했다."

‘~하도록 간청하다’의 뜻일 때 'plead'는 자동사로 뒤에 꼭 'with'를 써야 한다.
