# KIPP is a middle school. Classes are large: the fifth grade has two sections of thirty-five students each. There are no entrance exams or admissions requirement. Students are chosen by lottery, (A)[         ] any fourth grader living in the Bronx eligible to apply. Roughly half of the students are African American; the rest are Hispanic. Three-quarters of the children come from single-parent homes. 'with 명사 형용사'의 'with 구문'이 사용되어야 한다.

You're not getting any card until you chip in. 

"칩 안 넣으면 어떤 카드도 못 받게 된다."

게임에 들어가거나 (go in (for) ~), 베팅을 하려면 '칩을 넣고 들어가기에' 'go in'이 'chip in'로 바뀌어서 사용된 것이다.

A : Would you care to chip in on a gift for the teacher? 

"너네들 갹출해서 선생님 선물 사자?"

B : Yes, I'd be happy to chip in. "갹출하는 거 좋지."

I'll chip in another hundred but that's my limit. 

"난 100 달러는 더 넣지만 그건 마지막이다."

'chip in'이 타동사로 사용된 경우로 'put another hundred in (the game)'으로 이해하면 된다.

They chipped a few bucks in for snacks. "그들은 과자 사려고 몇 달러씩 갹출했다."

타동사로 쓰인 경우이므로 'in'이 뒤에 위치할 수 있다.

Would you like to chip in with a little cash on a gift for Carol? 

"캐럴의 선물 사는 데 약간의 현금을 갹출할래?"

타동사로 쓰지 않고 'chip in'과 함께 전치사 'with'를 사용할 수도 있다.

Would you chip in with a few bucks for a gift for Carol?'

'chip in'을 사용하고도 다시 'cash'나 'bucks' 등을 사용할 수 있다.

[각출과 갹출]

'각출'[各出] (각자가 내다)은 두 사람 이상이 돈을 낼 때 금액이 동등한 경우이고, '갹출'[醵出] (술잔치 갹, 추렴할 갹)은 금액이 동등하다는 의미는 없다. '각출'은 목적이 정해지지 않은 경우도 있지만(회비), '갹출'은 목적이 정해져 있는 경우에 사용합니다. 

The three of us chipped in and bought the boat for Dad. 

"우리 세 명은 갹출해서 아버지에게 보트를 사주었다."

Everyone chipped in for the gift. "모두가 선물을 사려고 (능력껏) 갹출했다."

We all chipped in to buy Amy a graduation present.

They each chipped in $50 to take their parents out to dinner. 

"그들은 부모님을 저녁 외식하게 하려고 50 달러씩 각출했다."

'chip in'은 '각출'(ㅎ N 빵)의 의미로도 사용된다.

2) 나눠하다 

If everyone chips in to help, we can clean this garage in no time. 

"모두가 나눠서 도우면 이 차고는 금방 치울 수 있어."

3) 끼어들다 : cut in 

'chip'은 원래 영어에서 'cut'의 뜻인 데서 'cut in'과 같은 뜻이 된다. [참고로 'chisel'(조각칼, 끌, 정)은 라틴어 'caedere'(cut)에서 온 단어이다.]

Other committee members chipped in with suggestions. 

"다른 위원들이 끼어들어 제안을 했다."

'Give her a kiss, Robbie,' chipped in one of the photographers. 

"사진사들 중의 한 명이 '로비, 그녀에게 키스하세요.'라고 끼어들어 말했다."
