'be of'는 'have'와 같은 뜻이다.

[해설]

[비절 비교의 'no more than ~']

'4 번'을 적은 숫자로 생각하기에 'no more than'을 그 앞에 사용하고 있다. 또 '몇 천 명'을 적은 수로 생각하기에 그 앞에 'no more than'을 사용하고 있다. 화자의 수에 대한 느낌을 나타내지 않으면 그냥 'no more than'을 빼버리면 그만이다. 이는 이 부분이 절의 다른 부분과 아무런 상관없이 사용되는 것으로 '비절 비교의 no more than ~'이라 칭한다.

[절 비교의 'no more ~ than ~']

'If A were of no y much consequence'와 'the change (from rotating a cue ball) were of x much consequence'가 비교로 연결하면 'y much consequence'는 'more consequence'로 바뀌고 'x much consequence'는 'more'로 바뀌어서 자기 절의 앞에 사용하고 반복되는 형태인 'were of'는 생략하고 'consequence'는 필히 탈락시킨다. 이처럼 두 개의 절로 분석할 수 있는 경우를 '절 비교의 no more ~ than ~'라고 칭한다.

① Tom is as courageous as John (is).

①을 부정한 것이 ②인데 동등 비교에서 배웠듯이 ②는 거의 [ Tom's courage < John's courage ]의 의미를 갖는다.

②=③ Tom is less courageous than John (is).

Tom is y courageous / John is x courageous

[ y < x ]

이 관계에서 'than'을 삽입한 후에 'x'를 삭제하고 'y'를 'less'로 바꾸어 표현하는 비교가 ③인데 이를 ★'열등 비교'라 한다.

④ Tom is more courageous than John (is).

⑤ Tom is not more courageous than John (is).

④를 부정한 것이 ⑤인데 ⑤는 'not'이 'more'를 초점으로 하면 [y ≯ x]('y는 x 보다 크지 않다') 의 관계이므로 결국 [ y ≤ x ] 즉 [ y = x ] or [ y < x ]이므로 ③의 뜻을 함축하고 있다.

물론 ⑤는 ④의 단순한 부정으로 'It is not true that Tom is more courageous than John (is).'의 뜻일 수도 있다.

ⓐ John is courageous. "John은 용감하다."

ⓑ John is courageous. Tom is still more courageous (than John). "Tom은 더욱더 용감하다."

ⓒ Tom is more courageous than John. Ben is still more courageous (than Tom).

"Tom은 John에 비하여 용감하다. Ben은 (Tom보다) 더욱더 용감하다."

ⓓ Tom is still more courageous than John.

'still more courageous than'은 '~보다 더더욱 용감한'으로 해석하고 이때는 'John도 용감하다' 뜻을 함축하고 있다.

ⓔ Tom is more courageous than John.

'more courageous than ~'은 보통 '~보다 더 용감한'이라고 해석하지만 'still'이 쓰인 경우와는 달리 'John이 용감하다'라는 뜻을 반드시 함축하지는 않는다. 대개의 경우는 '둘 다 용감하지만 Tom이 더 용감하다'라는 뜻을 갖지만 그렇지 않을 수도 있다.

ⓕ Although Tom is more courageous than John, both of them are a coward.

이 경우라면 'Tom과 John은 둘 다 용감하지 않지만 그래도 Tom이 조금 낫다'라는 뜻이다. 이런 점에서 'more courageous than~'에서 'than'은 '~에 비하여'★★라고 해석하는 것이 더 원칙에 가깝다고 할 수 있다.

'no more' / 'not any more'는 직역하면 '조금도 더 많이 용감하지는 않다'라는 뜻인데 모국어 화자는 이 경우 'than'이후에 나오는 'John'은 ★'용감하지 않다'라는 ★함축 의미를 갖고 있는 것으로 생각한다. 그래서 '용감하지 않은 John에 비하여 Tom은 용감성의 정도가 조금도 나을 것이 없다'의 뜻이고 줄여서 'Tom은 John이나 ★마찬가지로 용감하지 않다'로 해석한다.

'no less' / 'not any less'는 직역하면 '조금도 덜 용감하지는 않다'라는 뜻인데 모국어 화자들은 이 경우 'than'이후에 나오는 'John'은 ★'용감하다'라는 ★함축 의미를 갖고 있는 것으로 생각한다. 그래서 '용감한 John에 비하여 Tom은 용감성의 정도가 조금도 못할 것이 없다'의 뜻이고 줄여서 'Tom은 John과 ★마찬가지로 정말 용감하다'로 해석한다.

그리고 'no more courageous than ~'에서 'than ~' 속의 부정적인 의미는 함축 의미로 표시되는 것이므로 절대로 ★★'not'을 써서는 안 된다.

이런 개념이 이해하기 어려우면 'no less courageous'의 경우는 'no less'를 '왕창'으로 보고 ★★'왕창 용감하기는 매일반이다'로 'no more courageous'의 경우는 'no more'를 '쥐꼬리만큼'으로 보고 ★★'쥐꼬리만큼 용감하기는 매일반이다'로 이해해도 무방하다.

You are no more mad than he is. (You are not mad)

You are no less mad than he is. (You are mad)

★ 빠르게 이해하려면 'no more'는 부정(not)이고 'no less'는 긍정이다.

The bread is no worse than mine.

= The bread is no *more bad than mine. (The bread is not bad)

= The bread is as good as mine.

The fact that he looked no worse than the rest of the loose souls who were up and around on Shattuck Avenue in Mai's 24-Hour Mini-Mart in the wake of an earthquake seemed like no safeguard whatsoever. (not bad = as good as)

"지진이 난 후에 샤투크 가에 있는 메이의 24 시간 미니 마트에서 일어나 움직이고 있는 한가한 나머지 사람들과 마찬가지로 그도 괜찮게 보인다는 사실은 전혀 안전을 보장해주는 것 같지 않았다."

'불규칙형 bad'는 비교급으로 '*more bad'를 쓸 수는 없어서 'worse'로 쓰지만 'no'가있는 한 의미는 마찬가지이다.

He's no more fit to be a priest than I am! "그는 나만큼이나 신부가 되기 적합지 않다."

I can no more apologize than I could / *could not kneel to them.

"난 그들에게 사과할 수 없다. 그들에게 무릎 꿇을 수 없듯이."

= I cannot apologize to them. I cannot kneel to them, either. 

"나는 그들에게 사과할 수 없다. 그들에게 무릎 꿇을 수도 없다."

'no more ~than'은 이처럼 바꿔 쓸 수 있기 때문에 ★★'양쪽 부정'을 나타낸다고도 말한다.

I would no more think of hitting a student than I would a policeman.

"학생들 때릴 생각 전혀 없다. 경찰을 때릴 생각이 없듯이"

She is no more a fool than you (are). "그녀는 전혀 바보가 아니다. 네가 바보가 아니듯."

He's no more your friend than I am / *am not your mother.

'He is not your friend.'라고 하는 것보다는 '그가 너의 친구라면 나는 네 엄마다.' 또는 '그래 그는 너의 친구라 할 수 있어 내가 너의 엄마이듯이.'라고 수사적으로 말하는 것이 더욱 강한 뜻을 나타낸다는 점에서 이를 ★★'부정을 강조하는 표현'이라고 하기도 한다.

A whale is no more a fish than a horse is. "고래는 확실히 물고기 아니다. 말이 물고기가 아니듯."

= A whale is not a fish any more than a horse is.

'no'를 'not any'로 분리시킨 경우이다.

He's no more able to read Chinese than I am. "게도 한자 읽을 수 없어. 나나 마찬가지로."

cf. Fresh air is not less necessary than clean water for health. "못지않게 필요한"

= Fresh air is perhaps more necessary than clean water for health.

"신선한 공기는 건강을 위해서 깨끗한 물보다 아마도 더 필요하다."

cf. It's no more than you deserve. "그건 네가 당해 마땅하다." ['절 비교'지만 양쪽 부정은 아니다.]

'not any y'와 'you deserve x'가 연결되면서 '조금도 더 많은 것이 아닌', '마땅한 것'의 뜻이 된다.

Rachel felt it was no more than her duty to look after her husband.
