#1.  In 2002, I was in Israel at a dinner with the editor of Ha'aretz, which publishes my column in Hebrew. I asked the editor why the newspaper ran my column, and he joked, "Tom, you're the only optimist we have." An Israeli general, Uzi Dayan, was seated next to me, and as we walked to the table, he said, "Tom, I know why you're an optimist. It's because you're short and you can only see that part of the glass that's half full."

   Truth (A)[   ] told, I am not that short, but that is what I see. I will not be adding to this book again. This journey is over. Here's hoping that the next time I take pen to paper to write about this region, it will be for an all-new book that tells the story of a glass all full.

#2. Collins smiled. "You're a smart kid. You know, I have a boy maybe a year younger than you." 

  "What's his name?"

  Collins hesitated, then said, "Michael. Mikey."

  "What's he like?"

  Her eyes went distant. "Smart, like I said. And funny."

  "Does he have a dad?"

  She shook her head. "He's not around anymore. Truth (B)[    ] told, he was a bit of an asshole."

  "Mine's not around, either," Sean said. "I guess he's an asshole too."

  "You shouldn't say words like that."

 

#3. While I insist that the intimidating atmosphere of Beirut never prevented a major breaking news story from being covered in some way, there were, however, some slightly immediate--yet important--stories which were deliberately ignored out of fear. Here I will be the first to say "mea culpa." How many serious stories were written from Beirut about the well-known corruption in the PLO leadership, the misuse of funds, and the way in which the organization had become as much a corporation full of bureaucratic hacks as a guerrilla outfit? These traits were precisely the cause of the rebellion against Arafat after the summer of '82, but it would be hard to find any hint of them in Beirut reporting before the Israeli invasion. The truth (C)[   ], the Western press coddled the PLO and never judged it with anywhere near the scrutiny that it judged Israeli, Phalangist, or American behavior. For any Beirut-based correspondent, the name of the game was keeping on good terms with the PLO, because without it you would not get the interview with Arafat you wanted when your foreign editor came to town. The overfocusing by reporters on the PLO and its perception of events also led them to ignore the Lebanese Shiites and their simmering wrath at the Palestinians for turning their villages in south Lebanon into battlefields.

#4. "I'm at Lightning Latte. Ride home?"

  In the silence that follows, I remember him insisting I stay home. "It's fine. There are tons of people around." Not true, the Tennisians have left, but I am in the middle of town. "And we needed groceries." (D)[   ], but I failed to get there. "Pick me up at the Piggy Wiggly in ten?" At least, I can get milk.

[#1. 해석]   2002 년 나는 이스라엘에서 히브리 어로 내 칼럼을 게재하는 하아레츠 지의 편집자와 함께 저녁 식사 자리에 갔었다. 나는 편집자에게 신문사가 왜 내 칼럼을 게재했냐고 물었고 그는 농담을 했다. "톰, 우리한테 당신은 유일한 낙관 주의자여서." 이스라엘의 장군인 우지 다이안(모세 다이안의 조카)은 내 옆자리에 앉아 있다가 우리가 테이블로 걸어갈 때 이렇게 말했다. "톰, 난 자네가 왜 낙관 주의자인지 알아. 그건 자네가 키가 작아서 잔의 반이 채워진 부분만을 볼 수 있기 때문이지."

   뭐 사실을 말하자면, 난 그렇게 키가 작지 않다. 하지만 그게 내가 본 부분인 건 맞다. 다시 이 책에 뭘 덧붙이지 않을 겁니다. 이 여정은 끝났습니다. 펜을 종이에 대고 이 지역에 대해 글을 쓰게 되는 다음번에는 가득 찬 잔에 대한 이야기를 하는 완전히 새로운 책이기를 희망합니다. 

[#2. 해석]  콜린즈는 미소지었다. "넌, 똑똑한 아이구나. 알아, 나도 너보다 한 살쯤 어린 남자 애가 있어."

  "이름이 뭔데요?"

  콜린즈는 주저하다가 말했다. "마이클. 마이키."

  "어떤 아인데요?"

  콜린즈의 눈은 먼곳을 향했다. "내가 말했듯이 똑똑하지. 그리고 재미있고."

  "아빠가 있나요?"

  콜린즈는 머리를 저었다. "더이상은 근처에 없어. 사실을 말하면 그는 좀 개자식이지."

  "제 아빠도 근처에 없어요."라고 션은 말했다. 제 생각에 우리 아빠도 역시 개자식이에요."

  "넌 그런 말 쓰면 안된다."

[#3. 해석]   베이루트의 위협적인 분위기가 결코 어떤 식으로든 터트릴 주요한 뉴스 기사를 취재하는 것을 방해한 적이 없었다고 나는 주장하지만 여기에는 두려움 때문에 의도적으로 무시되는 약간 즉각적이지만 중요한 기사들이 있었다. 나는 "내 잘못"이라고 말하는 선구자가 되겠습니다. 베이루트에서 얼마나 많은 심각한 기사들이 쓰였습니까? PLO 지도부의 그 유명한 부패에 대해서, 자금의 그릇된 운용에 대해서, 그리고 이 단체가 게릴라 집단 못지않게 돈벌이 하려는 관료들로 가득 찬 조직이 되어버린 것에 대해서. 이러한 특성들이 82 년 여름 이후에 있었던 아라파트에 대한 반역의 정확한 원인입니다. 하지만 이스라엘의 침략 이전에 베이루트에서 취재하면서 그런 특성들의 어떤 힌트도 알아내기는 어려웠습니다. 사실은 서방 언론은 PLO를 부드럽게 다루었고 이스라엘이나 팔란지스트나 미국의 행동을 판단하는 엄밀함과 대략 유사한 엄밀함을 가지고 PLO를 판단하지 않았습니다. 베이루트에 주재하는 어떤 기자들에게도 가장 중요한 것은 PLO와 좋은 관계를 유지하는 것인데 그렇지 않으면 외국의 편집자들이 왔을 때 당신이 원하는 아라파트와의 인터뷰를 딸 수 없게 되기 때문이었다. 기자들이 PLO에 과도하게 집중하고 되고 사건에 대한 PLO의 인식이 기자들이 레바논 시아파들과 레바논 남부의 자신들의 마을을 전쟁터로 바꿔버린 것에 대한 그들의 끓어오르는 분노를 무시하게 했다.

  "뒤따르는 침묵 속에서 나는 그가 내게 집에 있으라고 한 게 기억났다. "그건 괜찮아요. 주변에 사람들이 많지요." 사실이 아니었다. 테니시언 부부는 떠난 상태고 난 시내 한 가운데 있었다. "그리고 우린 먹거리도 없었어요." 사실이지만 난 그로서리에 가지 못했다. "10 분 후에 피기 위글리에서 픽업 해 줄 수 있죠?" 적어도 우유는 살 수 있으니까.

[배경 지식]

Ha'aretz : 하아레츠 : 이스라엘에서 가장 오랜 역사를 지닌 일간지로 이스라엘 최고의 유력지이다. 끊임없이 정부와 사회를 비판해왔으며 균형 있는 사실적 보도와 범 세계주의적 입장, 불편부당한 논조로 유명하다.

[해설]

[(if the) truth be told / known]

사실이 말해져야 한다면, 뭐 사실을 말하자면  : used to say that one is stating the truth; I must admit; to be honest; in actuality  ['(if the) truth be told'의 줄어든(truncated) 형태로 '그게 사실인지는 모르지만 굳이 사실로 말한다면'의 뜻인 '원형(be) 가정법의 (또는 가정법 현재의) 의미'를 지니고 있다. 곧 다루게 될 '가정법 현재(원형 가정법)' 부분을 참고하길 바란다.]

Truth be told, the food was pretty bad. "뭐 사실을 말하면, 음식은 아주 끔찍했어."

I'm not sure if I can do this, truth be told. "사실을 굳이 말하자면 이걸 할 수 있을지 확신이 없어."

Actually, truth be told, I just don't like you. "뭐 사실을 말하면 실제로 난 당신을 좋아하지 않아요."

Truth be told, even though I majored in English literature, I've never read anything by Hemingway!

If the truth be known, I felt a little left out at school. "사실을 알리자면 난 학교에서 조금 소외감을 느꼈다."

'독립 부정사'로 '사실인즉, 사실을 말하면' : I must admit; to be honest; in actuality

To tell you the truth, even though I majored in English literature, I've never read anything by Hemingway! 

"사실을 말하면, 영문학을 전공했지만 헤밍웨이의 작품이라곤 읽은 적이 없다."

I know I said I wanted to go out to the bars tonight, but to tell the truth, I'd rather just stay home and watch a movie.

"내가 오늘 밤 술집에 가길 원한다고 말했던 건 알지만 사실을 말하면 차라지 집에 있으면서 영화를 보고 싶다."

To tell the truth, I fell asleep in the middle of her talk. "사실인즉, 그녀가 말하는 동안에 난 잠이들었다."

사실은 = the truth is (that) ~ 

주절을 'that'을 삭제하고 'comma'를 사용해서 삽입적 표현으로 처리하는 방식이다.

The truth is, it is the Korean taste which is causing the problem.  "사실은, 문제가 되는 것은 한국인의 입맛이다."

솔직히 : in reality; actually; truthfully

말할 내용을 미리 평가하여 'in truth'(진실 속에) 넣어서 말하는 표현이다.

I like to act like I'm well traveled, but, in truth, I've never left the United States.

"나는 여행을 많이 한 것처럼 행동하지만 사실은 미국을 떠나 본 적이 없다."

She laughed and chatted but was, in truth, not having much fun.

"그녀는 웃으며 잡담을 했지만 사실은 그다지 즐기지 못하고 있었다."

[(It is) True, but ~]

True, but I failed to get there. "사실이지만 난 거기 가지 못했다."

'True' 앞에 흔히 'It is'는 생략되기도 한다.

He's a good student and usually does well. Granted, he did fail that one test, but I think there were good reasons for that. "그는 훌륭한 학생이고 대개 잘 한다. 그 한 번의 시험에 떨어진 것은 인정하지만 그럴만한 충분한 이유가 있었을 거라고 생각한다."

'It is granted that he did fail that one test, but I think ~'에서 'It is'와 'that'을 삭제하고 'Granted'를 'comma'를 사용해서 삽입 처리한 것이다.
