#2.    It was too late call up for a cab or anything, so I walked the whole way to the station. The only trouble was, the cold made my nose hurt, and right under my upper lip, where old Stradlator'd laid (B)[      ] on me. He'd smacked my lip right on my teeth, and it was pretty sore. My ears were (C)[     ] and warm, though. That hat I bought had earlaps in it, and I put them on--I didn't give a damn how I looked. Nobody was around anyway. Everybody was in the sack.

 

#3.    Then he really let (D)[      ] go at me, and the next thing I knew I was on the goddam floor again. I don't remember if he knocked me out or not, but I don't think so. It's pretty hard to knock a guy out, except in the goddam movies. But my nose was bleeding all over the place. When I looked up, old Stradlator was standing practically right on top of me. He had his goddam toilet kit under his arm. "Why the hell don'tcha shut up when I tellya to?" he said. He sounded pretty nervous. He probably was scared he'd fractured my skull or something when I hit the floor. It's too bad I didn't. "You asked (E)[     ] it, God damn it," he said. Boy, did he look worried.

[#2. 해석]    택시나 뭘 부르기엔 너무 늦어서 역까지 다 걸었다. 그리 멀지는 않았지만 지랄 같이 추웠고 눈이 와서 날씨가 걷기 어려웠고 글래드스턴 가방이 나리를 계속 때려서 열라 아팠다. 하지만 좀 그런 거를 즐겼다. 유일한 문제는 추위로 인해 코가 아팠고 스트래들레이터 선배가 내게 한 방 먹인 바로 윗 입술 아래가 아팠다는 것이었다. 그는 바로 내 이빨을 가격했고 그건 상당히 아팠다. 하지만 귀는 아주 따뜻했다. 내가 산 그 모자는 귀 덮개가 있고 그걸 썼다. 어떤 모습일지 전혀 신경 쓰지 않았다. 어쨌든 주변엔 아무도 없었다. 다들 잠들었으니까.

[#3. 해석]    그러더니 그는 정말로 내게 한 방을 날렸고 다음 순간 나는 다시 바닥에 처박혔다. 날 완전히 케이오시켰는지 아닌지는 모르겠지만 그런 거 같지는 않았다. 누군가를 KO 시키는 것은 아주 어렵다. 지랄 영화에서나 가능한 거다. 하지만 내 코는 온통 피가 났다. 올려 보니 스트래들레이터 선배가 바로 나를 타고 앉아 있었다. 지랄 화장실 키트를 팔 아래 끼고 있었다. "내가 말했을 때 지랄 왜 닥치지 않은 거야?"라고 그는 말했다. 말하는 소리가 아주 불안했다. 내가 바닥에 부딪혔을 때 두골이나 뭐라도 깨졌을까 두려워하는 거였다. 안 깨진 게 유감이었다. "지랄, 네가 자초한 거야."라고 그는 말했다. 아이고 자식, 정말 걱정하고 있었다.

[어휘 또는 표현]

'one'의 기본적인 의미는 '한 방'입니다. 순수한 의미로 '주먹(fist) 한 방'의 뜻일 수도 있고 '키스 (한 방)'을 뜻할 수도 있고 '방구(fart) 한 방'을 뜻할 수도 있습니다.
