whole cloth : 원단 → 날조 : pure fabrication -- usually in the phrase out of whold cloth : 사실무근인; 거짓의; (미 구어) 아주 엉터리인; 순전히 날조한 [원래는 'a whole cloth',(or broadcloth)는 쪼가리 천이 아닌 풀 사이즈의 원단을 의미했고 '순전한 것'을 의미했다. 19세기에 의미의 반전이 일어나게 되는데 그 후에 재단사들이 원단이 아닌 것을 댕겨 펼쳐서 *원단인 양 한 데서 '날조'의 뜻이 생겨났다고도 추측한다.]
