[#1. 해석]    가톨릭은 믿음은 필수적이긴 하지만 충분하지는 않다고 주장했다. 하늘나라에 들어가기 위해선 신도들은 교회의 의식에 참가하고 선행을 하는 것이 필요했다. 신교도들은 이를 받아들이기를 거부하면서 이러한 답례 형식은 신의 위대하심과 사랑을 경시하는 것이라 주장했다. 하늘나라에 들어가는 것이 자신의 선행에 달려있다고 생각하는 사람은 누구이든 자기 자신의 중요성은 확대시키면서 십자가에서의 그리스도의 고난과 인류에 대한 신의 사랑은 충분하지 않다고 말하는 것이다.

[kwíd prou kwóu] : 답례, 대상, 보수; 대용품; 대갚음 : this for that, this instead of that; a favor for a favor; you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours; one hand washes the other ; 약간 나쁜 의미로 'tit for tat'  ['quo'(저것)에 대해('pro' : for, instead of) 'quid'(이것)을 주는 것에서]

The problem is that so far, quid pro quo is understood by the law as taking place basically only if one party explicitly ties its donation and gifts to a specific return. "문제는 지금까지 QPQ는 법에 의해서 기본적으로 한 당사자가 주는 것이나 선물을 특정한 되받음과 연계시킬 때만 일어나는 것으로 이해된다는 것이다."

이태리, 스페인, 프랑스어에서는 'quid pro quo'는 '오해, 착각(misunderstanding or a mistake)'의 뜻으로 쓰이고 영어에서 사용되는 'QPQ'의 뜻으로는 라틴어 'do ut des'(도 우트 데스)가 사용된다. 'do'는 'dare'(give)가 '-o'로 끝나면 주어가 일인칭 단수임을 알 수 있고 'ut'는 'so that'이나 'to 부정사 목적 용법'으로 이해하고 'des'는 접속법 현재 단수 2인칭이다. [ㅎ 기본형 o-s-t] "(나는) 준다, (네가) 주도록 하기 위하여" 정도로 이해하면 된다.
