[어휘 또는 표현]

customer : 손님, 고객, 거래처; (비격식) (상대할 수밖에 없는) 놈, 녀석(fellow, chap)

[대소-성상-신구-재료] 뭐 이런 식으로 외우죠. 모국어 화자는 크기를 더 주관적으로 보니까 명사에서 멀리 떨어지고 생김새는 덜 주관적으로 보기에 명사에서 덜 멀리 떨어집니다. [ㅎ 톰 크루즈는 덩치도 작고 너무 'ugly'하지 않아서 리처 역으로는 부적합하지요.]

long-case clock : 대형 괘종시계

(E) ~ were (D)[less welcome] than (E)[him] 

'than'은 접속사지만 홀로 남으면 전치사적 성격을 지녀서 원래는 'he'지만 'him'을 주로 사용한다.

(C) ~ he was no kind of (C)[an ideal nighttime visitor]

보통은 'kind of' 다음에는 부정관사를 사용하지 않지만 '일종의 그래서 다소 격이 떨어지는 의미로'는 부정관사를 사용한다.

형용사인 'awful late'를 관계사 'which'로 받을 수 있다. 비제한적 용법이므로 'that'을 사용할 수 없다.

부정관사를 사용할 경우엔 '다소 이상한 격이 떨어지는'의 의미를 갖게 된다.

A witch doctor is a kind of a doctor and priest in one person.

"마녀 의사는 한 사람에 뭐 의사랄까, 신부랄까 같이 존재하는 사람이지.

He is, after all, both a sort of a doctor and a sort of a priest. 

"그는 결국 일종의 의사면서 일종의 신부이기도 해."

'something of a doctor', 'much of a doctor', 'somewhat of a doctor'와 마찬가지로 여겨질 때 'a kind of'나 a' sort of' 다음에 'a doctor'가 나올 수 있는데 ★‘일종의 그래서 다소 격이 떨어지는’의 의미로 주로 사용한다.

My question is, what do I call this party on the invitations? I can't think of anything that sounds right and I'm not sure if our friends would understand an adjusted birthday. Has anyone else had this sort of party or a party to celebrate an adjusted birthday? If so, what did you call it - or is it still just a birthday party?

단순히 종류만을 언급하면 'this sort of party', 다소 이상한 격이 떨어지는 것을 의미하면 'this sort of a party'를 사용한다. 위의 문장에서는 그 둘을 등위해서 쓰고 있다.

That's a sort of joke, but the sort that's funny because it's actually true.

"그건 일종의 농담이지만 실제로 사실이기 때문에 재미있는 그런 종류야."

One weekend I was bored and as a sort of a joke I made this Web site.

"한 주는 매우 지루했어 그래서 뭐 일종의 이상한 장난으로 이 웹 사이트를 만들었어."

The new name was a joke, sort of. And yet, soon enough, it wasn't a joke anymore.

이처럼 'sort of'를 뒤로 분리해 놓는 경우도 있다.

This kind of party only happens once a year in Korea. "이런 종류의 파티는 한국에서는 일 년에 한번 있다."

I always wanted to go to this sort of party. "나는 항상 이런 종류의 파티에 가길 원했었다."

He was always late, always complained - that sort of thing. (기타 등등, 뭐 그런 식)

"그는 항상 늦으면서 항상 불평했다. 뭐 그런 식이었다."

Little decoration is required for this type of party. "이런 유형의 파티에는 장식이 거의 필요 없다."

형용사처럼 쓰인 'kind of' / 'sort of' / 'type of'를 생략하면 'this (kind of) party', 'that (kind of) party', 'this (sort of) party', 'this (type of) party'로 이해할 수 있다.

It seems kind of strange to me that my daughter has been invited to this kind of a party and we do not know her or her parents. Would you let your child go to a sleepover at someone's house based on this information?

"내 딸이 이 이상한 종류의 파티에 초청되었다는 건 좀 기이하다. 그리고 우린 게나 게 부모들도 모른다. 당신이라면 이런 정보를 바탕으로 당신의 딸을 누군가의 집에서 자고 오는 파티에 가도록 허용하시겠습니까?"

'this kind of a party'는 ‘이 이상한 파티’ 정도로 의미를 이해할 수 있다.

What kind of report is this passage? "이 글은 어떤 종류의 보고서입니까?"

Evil Boss #1: What kind of a report is this!? "뭐 어떤 이상한 종류의 보고서냐고?"

You : Uhm, the kind that ticks someone off? "음, 누군가를 성나게 하는 그런 종류?"

원칙은 'what kind of report'지만 ★강하게 불만을 표시할 때는 'what kind of a report'를 쓰는 경우도 있다.

What kind of King are you? Find out what kind of ruler you would be! Are you a philosopher king or just another tyrant? "당신은 어떤 종류의 왕이십니까? 어떤 종류의 지배자가 될 건지 생각해 보세요! 당신은 철학자인 왕입니까 아니면 그냥 또 하나의 독재자입니까?

Then Pilate asked the crucial question: “Well, then, Jesus, What kind of a king are you? What kind of a king are you, Jesus of Nazareth?” "이제 빌라도는 중요한 질문을 합니다. '그럼, 예수 당신은 뭐 이상한 종류의 왕이오? 나사렛 예수, 당신은 뭐 이상한 왕이라도 돼요?'"

That is our question today, “What kind of king was this Jesus of Nazareth?”

빌라도가 질문할 때는 비난조이므로 'What kind of a king'을 사용했고 우리의 질문은 비난조가 아니므로 'What kind of king'을 사용하고 있다.

I'm no kind of doctor, so take my words with a huge grain of salt. 

"넌 어떤 종류의 의사도 아니니까 내 말은 에누리해서 들어요."

'type'은 정도의 개념이 없으므로 'what type of a doctor'는 옳지 않은 표현이다.
