# ~ ~ We particularly seek to avoid conflict in the classroom. One reason is habit: we are so accustomed to blandness that the classroom would strike us (A)[       ] a violation of polite rhetoric, or classroom norms. We are supposed to speak well of the deceased, after all. [해석] ~ ~ 우리는 특히 교실에서 다툼을 피하고자 한다. 한가지 이유는 관습이다. 우리는 온화함에 아주 습관적이서 그런 교실은 우리에게 정중한 논법과 교실의 규범을 위배한 것으로 생각된다. 우리는 결국 고인들에 대해서는 좋게 얘기하게 되어 있다. 아마도 우리들은 같은 외경심, 경외심과 존중의 태도를 유지하게 되어 있다. 우리가 전국적 대성당에 방문하여 헬렌 켈러난 우드로 윌슨의 최종 영면지를 보게 되었을 때와 같이. 이들은 살아서는 이데올로기적으로 거리가 먼 만큼이나 죽어서는 육체적으로 그만큼 유사하다.

Probably we are supposed to maintain the same attitude of awe, reverence, and respect when we read about our national heroes as when ~

[해설]

One reason is habit: we are so accustomed to blandness that the classroom would strike us (A)[as] a violation of polite rhetoric, or classroom norms.

특수 형식 'strike 목적어 as ~'의 표현이다. 'would'를 사용한 것은 가정법 과거로 사용하고 있다. '그런 교실'로 의역했다.

[다른 형용사의 비교]

David is y erudite

he is x creative

x = y = as

'x'와 'y'를 모두 'as'로 바꾼 후에 종속절의 'as'를 접속사로 쓰기 위해 절 앞으로 보낸 후에 다른 형용사인 'creative'는 그대로 둔다.

David is as erudite as he is creative. "데이비드는 창의적인 만큼 박식하기도 하다."

보통 이런 비교의 단위가 다를 경우는 흔히 대조적인 의미('창의성'과 '박식'은 대조적)인 경우 많이 쓰인다.

David is as erudite as Mary is *erudite. → David is as erudite as Mary is. 

"데이비드는 메리만큼 박식하다."

비교의 대상이 같은 때는 종속절에는 비교의 단위를 필히 생략해야 한다.

He was as honest as he was intelligent. "그는 영리한 만큼 정직하기도 하다."

보통 정직과 영리함은 대조되는 개념이다. [ㅎ 똑똑한 게 정직한 것과 대조가 되긴 하나요?]

This man has as many servants as that man has children. 

"이 사람은 저 사람의 자녀들 수만큼의 하인들이 있다."

John has as many apples as Mary has oranges

"존에게는 메리의 오렌지와 같은 수의 사과가 있다."

"그는 똑똑한 것만큼이나 정직한 사람이었다."
