# At the same time, the Snobs must win a few. For example, the mixing together of words of different language in a single phrase is incorrect (just as mixing together is redundant). H. L. Mencken, the daring of American lexicographers and certainly no Snob in the study of what he called the American language objected to the phrase per year. As Macken put it, "Even Congress, which is an ass, always uses per (A)[         ], not per day." If you like Latin, you should say "per annum", if you prefer English, say "a year". I shall take that to heart when shelling (B)[         ] three dollars an hour, or per horam to my own kin for mowing the lawn.

(라틴어) (Pluck the day or seize the day) : phrase used by the Roman poet Horace to express the idea one should enjoy life while one can

carpe : pluck + diem : day : 원래 '이날을 따서 열매를 먹다'에서 전용된 표현이다. ['diurnal', 'daily'와 같은 어원에서]

Even Congress, which is an ass, always uses per (A)[diem], not per day.

: ~에 대해 거액을 지불하다; 마지못해 지불하다 : to pay money for something, especially when the cost is unexpected and not wanted [주머니나 지갑에서 돈을 꺼내는 것을 [조개·열매·씨 등의] 껍질이나 꼬투리(shell)에서 알맹이(beans, seeds, nuts)를 꺼내는 것에 비유한 데서]

If we lose the case, we'll be forced to shell out.
