[가정법 현재(Present subjunctives)]

'if it come to that'은 조건절인데 'it' 다음에 원형인 'come'이 사용되고 있다.

조건절이나 양보절에서 옛날에 사용되던 원형을 '가정법 현재'나 '원형 가정법'이라고 한다. 과거에 'if it come to that'을 사용하던 것이 'if it'이 생략되면서 만들어진 형태이다.

가정법에 가서 이 '원형 가정법'을 참조하기 바란다.

[해설]

['tide one over ~ (타동사)'와 'tide over ~(자동사)']

[고난·장애·위기 등을] 벗어나다, 극복하다; [고난·괴로움 등을] 벗어나게 하다, 극복시키다 : to maintain, sustain, or support one through a lean or difficult time until more of something is accquired, especially food or money; to help someone to work or operate normally through a difficult period, usually by lending them money [타동사로 더 많이 사용된다. 원래 항해 용어로 뱃사람들은 다른 곳으로 이동하려면 조류에 의존했던 것에서 유래했다. 자동사인 경우는 2형식 동사를 사용하는 'get over'와 비슷한 표현이다.]

Can you lend me some money to tide me over till the weekend?

"주말까지 나 견디게 돈 좀 내게 빌려줄 수 있지요?"

Have another piece of cake. It'll tide you over till supper.

"케이크 한 조각 더 드세요. 저녁때까지 버티게 해 줄 겁니다."
