#1.  This is why the German emperor who was ruling around 1500 is known as the Last Knight. His name was Maximilian, and he was a member of the Habsburg family, whose might and wealth had grown steadily since the time of King Rudolf. Since 1438 their power had spread beyond their own country of Austria, and (A)[    ] was their influence that all the German emperors who had been elected since then had been Habsburgs. Nevertheless, the German noblemen and princes gave most of them a good deal of trouble, and Maximilian the Last Knight was no exception. I read this years ago and so enjoyed it that I bought it again to re-read. Enjoyed it just as much as the first time.

단독의 'so'와 형용사가 없는 명사구 앞에서 'such'도 '강한 정도' 나타낼 수 있는데 이는 감탄문인 'How I enjoyed it!'이나 'What a crowd there was!'에서의 'How'나 'What a crowd'와 같은 용법인 셈이다.

I enjoyed it so, that I'm determined to go again. "아주 재미 있어서 다기 가보기로 마음먹고 있어."

The crowd was such, that we couldn't see a thing. "아주 엄청난 군중이어서 우린 아무것도 보지 못했다."

격식체에서 드물게 'so'와 'such'가 'that '앞에 쓰이는 경우가 있는데 보통은 그 앞에 'comma'를 사용한다.
