#1.   Tonight, I find myself here in a guest house in the city of Salisbury. The first day of my trip is now completed, and all in all, I must say I am quite satisfied. This expedition began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, despite my having completed my packing and loaded the Ford with all necessary items well before eight o'clock. What with one thing and another, I couldn't sleep last night.  "이런저런 일로 어젯밤 잠을 이룰 수가 없었다."

'what with A and (what with) B'에서 'A'와 'B'는 보통 명사나 동명사이고 '흔히 좋지 않은 사태의 원인 둘 이상'을 이끄는데 흔히 'A다 B다 하여' 또는 'A 하거나 B 하거나 하여'로 해석한다.

It occurred to him that what with one thing and another during the day, he had never checked Tillie's information about the warehouse robbery. "낮에 이런저런 일로 해서 물품 창고의 도난 사건에 대한 틸리의 정보를 자신이 체크한 적도 없었다는 생각이 들었다."

이처럼 보통은 명사가 뒤따르지만

What with the prices (being) so high and my wife (being) out of work, I can't afford a new refrigerator.

'what with A and (what with) B'는 'A다 B다 하여'(원인)의 뜻으로 쓰인다. 드물게 'what between A and B'로도 쓰인다.

What with the bad weather this spring I wasn't able to do much gardening.

"이 봄엔 나쁜 날씨로 정원 일을 많이 할 수 없었다."

'what with A'로 하나만 쓰이는 경우도 드물게 있기는 하다.

What by threats and what by entreaties, he finally had his will. 

"협박도 하고 애원도 해서 그는 결국 소원을 이루었다."

'방법'을 나타낼 때는 'what by A and what by B'를 사용한다.
