  "I seem to have no choice," Phillip said. "It's a mistake, Megan."

  "I know. The whole thing is a mistake. None of us have a choice." She looked at Eve. "When is Kistle going to call you?"

[해설]

[hold (down) the fort]

(공격·비판에 대해서) 자기의 입장을 지키다, 물러서지 않다 : to maintain a secure position

(사람이 없는 동안) 현상을 유지해 가다 : to assume responsibility, especially in another's absence

집 잘 지켜라 : to take care of a place while someone who is usually there is gone; such as a store or one's home (From western movies) ['fort'는 '요새'의 뜻으로 '요새를 지키다'의 뜻에서 온 표현이다. 원래는 'hold the fort'인데 어쩌다 보니 미국식 영어에서 흔히 'down'을 넣어서 사용하기도 한다.]

His business partner is holding the fort while he is away. 

"그의 사업 파트너가 그가 외출 중이어서 일을 대신하고 있어."

I'll be out of the office for a few hours - will you hold the fort until I get back?
